What can I expect from an appt at Breast Care Clinic to investigate a lump?

Brief history: - I recently accepted that I need to lose weight, about a stone, and have lost half a stone so far with Slimming World, a lot of it from my breasts. On Saturday I found a lump in my breast, quite big (about 2cm) soft and squishy.

I got an appointment at 9.00 on Monday morning with my GP. He had a thorough investigation, and said that I 'shouldn't lose any sleep over it', it doesn't seem anything nasty and 'if he was a gambling man he would put money on it being fine', no other symptoms, no puckering or pain.

At the back of my mind there is still 'yes, but what if...?' I now know that the expression about blood running cold is true.

I was referred to the Breast Clinic. The appointment is on Monday and they have just rung to say allow 3 hours. She mentioned possible mammogram and another procedure, but I can't remember what she said.

Does anyone know what I should expect from this appointment?

I'm glad you've got an appointment , most people who find a lump find it's nothing sinister but you're right to get it checked out. You will probably have a mammogram and ultrasound of the breast and armpit area then if they feel they need to they will do a biopsy. Then see the consultant for the results. Be prepared for waiting around. Really hope you get good news, if you need more support or advice come over to the tamoxifen thread you'd be very welcome

Pretty much what malteserzz said above. Can someone go with you? My friend came with me and I was very grateful. I had initially planned to go by myself as I hadn't told anyone except my DH. I felt a bit wobbly when I came out and so I was very happy not to have to drive home.
You won't necessarily get results on the day though. I had a follow up appointment a week later for results.
The staff at the breast care unit were all brilliant. I've had bad experiences with health care in the past, both NHS and private, but the breast care team were all great.
Statistically everything is likely to be fine but I know it's a worrying time.

Thanks for your replies.

DH is coming with me - my sense of direction is rubbish so I'd never get there!

The person who rang said I would get the results of the mammogram and the other test on the same day.

I did the classic thing of listening to her but not hearing what she said.

Just back from my appointment - all went well.

The staff were amazing and my lump is benign but 'it's a whopper' as the doctor said.

Glad to hear you got the all clear, that must be wait off your mind.

Doctors really should learn to watch their language. 5 weeks ago when I was at the beast clinic, the consultant described mine as being 'a bit of a stonker'. Not what I wanted to hear when only 5 minutes before he'd told me I had cancer. ..

Weight obviously not wait!

Thanks for your support Minty. I'm so sorry you are going through such a terrible time. I visited the Tamoxifen threads and I was in awe at the strength of the women there.

In case anyone else reads this thread - what happened to me at the appointment was: -

GP to Breast Clinic appointment was 7 days. I was examined by a doctor at the clinic, had a mammogram, then an ultrasound, then finally a biopsy done using something that sounded like a stapler.

Then back to the original doctor for the confirmation that all was well.

I should be getting a phone call this afternoon to confirm the results of the biopsy.
