Anyone with experience of screening re brain haemorrhage?

My 18 year old had his second migraine today. Lots of vomiting and numbness in one hand. The doctor saw him straight away and gave a diagnosis of migraine.

I stayed behind to mention to the dr that people on both sides of the family had fatal brain haemorrhages and expecting to be reassured that I was being a worry wart. The doctor said to make a follow up appointment as we need to look at further investigation because migraine sufferers
are at higher risk.

Does anyone have experience of being offered this and what happened? I'm not panicking but if I can benefit from other people's advice, that would be useful.

My daughter (6 at the time) was diagnosed with migraine but was followed up due to the fact that it had presented like a mini-stroke (TIA). Her initial follow up was fairly straightforward - a MRI/MRA scan at the hospital, which involved a cannula and lying still. In her case she needed a GA since she was too young to lie still, but a young adult would not need that. It was found from this that she had something more complicated than migraines, but I very much hope that this would not be the case for your child. Do make sure that you get it followed up though. All the best....

Thanks for your reply Boboma. I hope your daughter is well. He would have issues with the noise and closed space of the scanner so sedation would be useful. When MIL and her siblings were offered screening years ago, they were given advice beforehand about the pros and cons of screening eg what would life be like if they found something dangerous that was completely inoperable? This was why we decided against doing anything at all when they were children . MIL was keen for them to have screening though she did her best to hide it.

Yes, sedation is a good option for an MR rather than a full GA, and also they can play music down headphones to drown out the clunks and bangs. We weren't given advice about the cons of screening - and I think that would have messed with my head if we had been! However, so many things are treatable these days and in my mind it is much better to know where you are. My daughter is doing well thanks, and we have been very thankful for the fact that the drs were thorough and made the extra checks-that's why I replied.

Glad to hear your daughter's doing well. As my son has turned 18, the decision will be his to make. It's not the first big 'grown up' decision we were expecting him to face tbh but he's quite level headed.
