Goitre - very stressed

I went to the doc this morning a yesterday I became uncomfortable with a tender lump on the front of my neck. This she says is a Goitre on the Thyroid gland and has referred me for blood tests and an ultrasound scan. I feel sick with worry that this could be something cancerous or very serious. I am only 28 and have a 21 month old DD and feeling very stressed and teary. Any advice?

Sounds like your doc’s on the ball. The blood test will be to check your thyroid function and the ultrasound will check the nature of the lump/goitre and also. Hopefully, your thyroid gland. If I’m right, a goitre is, by definition, benign, and also surprisingly common, so please try not to worry too much. I hope you get an appointment date through very soon.

hi Rockin thanks so much. I am mainly worried because it hurts and I'm sure they are not supposed to be painful so worried about infection or cancerous cells.

It may just hurt because it's pressing on something, not because of itself, if you see what I mean.

Hi slightly

I also have a goitre mine is due to having hashimoto thyroiditis. It can become sore and I often get a sore throat feeling without actually having a sore throat iyswim. I also go through bouts of having a raspy voice.

Your gp is doing the right thing having it checked. I have had a scan previously too which showed inflammation of my thyroid and nothing else abnormal.

Just wanted to reassure you that can be something other than cancerous. Hth

Hashtag thank you. Okay yes sore is what I'm feeling at the moment just as you describe although I have some pain at the back of my neck too. Does it go away the soreness and just come back intermittently. Is your goitre big? Mine seems to be on one side only and not massive although I'm concerned it will grow.

I have that on my neck, it appeared after I had my DD. I've had the scan and blood tests, the doctor referred me to a consultant to talk over whether I wanted it removed. The consultant recommended we take the wait and see approach as its not causing any problems.

If I did want it removed then it would mean removing half of my thyroid which I didnt want as blood tests showed it was healthy.

Thanks.Wee. do you have Any discomfort ever from your goitre? has it got bigger or.changed at all?

Ive had mine since Feb and its not causing and discomfort, some days it feels like its getting smaller. I actually had it scanned again on Monday as the consultant wanted to check what it was like since my 1st scan so I see him again shortly, im pretty sure he'll still say the best option is is to leave it alone.

Yes slightly the soreness comes and goes. When will you get your blood results back?

You should have a clearer picture of what is happening then

WeeClype · 06/08/2014 17:44

and I should add too that about 10 years ago a lump appeared at the same place I have my lump just now. The one from years ago got drained as it was one big cyst, I cant get this one drained as its hundred of tiny cysts Sad

slightlyconfused85 · 06/08/2014 17:53

Thank you both. I had the blood test this morning and they said 2 working days so I hope to know more by the start of next week. I have done some research on hypo and hyperthyroidism disorders on the famous Dr. Google, but I don't feel I've had many of these symptoms. The only one I have is tiredness but I am not a very good sleeper and I'm also the mother of a very small toddler!

Online usually shows the autoimmune types of thyroid disorders one of which I have. But they aren't always autoimmune types some can be treatable easily with antithyroid medication or thyroxine depending on the type.

Hopefully it's something easily treatable.

slightlyconfused85 · 07/08/2014 09:43

well I had my blood tests back and all normal on the thyroid and kidney front. Although 'inflammation' was higher than normal although not loads. This apparently could mean anything. I saw a different GP and he found another lymph node which he said was swollen and they wouldn't jnow any more until a scan.
Feel even worse now as I just have an unexplained painful lump and a swollen lymph node and won't know what it is for ages.

Still could be thyroid related I tested Normal for a long time. Did you have your thyroid antibodies tested?

slightlyconfused85 · 07/08/2014 12:30

Thanks. The GP I saw this morning just called me to say he had re-referred me to the cancer clinic head and neck at our local hospital trust to 'rule out cancer'. I'm very concerned now, as this sounds to me like they are worried but he said it's just a quicker way to get a scan.

I've had one for years. I just monitor it with an annual ultrasound and blood test. It's very very common and not a big issue.

Even thyroid cancer, while it sounds bad, rarely spreads or is life threatening. They just remove it and give you medication. Really not something to worry about.
