Ouch Ouch Ouch!!!!!

I had an infection in my lower wisdom teeth, which I have had for a couple of days.I couldnt get an emergency appointment with my usual dentist until next week. Did some phoning around as was in so much pain and I couldnt wait and found some one that could see me today.

Thought that I was just going to go there for a check up and get prescribed some anti-biotics.

When I went into the dentist looked abit run down but was in so much pain I didnt really care, dentist had a look and said that the gum was causing problems that I needed to have it cut abit, and that it would probably be a good idea to have my top wisdom tooth out at some stage.

Next thing I know i have 8-10 injections of local anestetic, still thought I was just going to have the gum cut the next thing I know he was yanking at my tooth, after incrediple pain and what seemed like hours, the tooth was out!!!

Have been in lots of pain now spread over (top and bottom) and shock since this afternoon.

Does anyone have any tips on what to do to help the healing process as havnt really had any chance to look it up as thought I was just going for him to have a look.

Thanks xXx

OH poor you,I had a wisdom tooth taken out that had an infection under it .I didn't have a lot of pain after .Have you got some strong painkillers with codeine in it?
Cloves are meant to numb it I think, sorry not much help...but sending you my sympathy, dental pain is the worst

jabberwocky · 15/09/2006 00:37

Holy Cow! What a shocker! oil of cloves does numb, salt water rinses are good. Tylenol and Ibuprofen (don't know what the UK names are, sorry) can help a bit. did he give you a prescription for painkillers? ComeOVeneer is a dentist I believe and can offer better advice than I can.

YummyMummy21, phone your dentist asap...if you are in pain they ave a charter of care t see you within 24 hours.

YummyMummy21 · 15/09/2006 12:28

Hi all Thanks for your help.

I have been taking 400mg Ibuprofen but am not getting any relief from the pain.

The Dentist I went to see is not my normal dentist and im NEVER going back there!!!! He didnt give me any pain killers, or anti-biotics for the infection. He just took out a health wisdom tooth to stop it touching the infected one and sent me on my mery way.

I am still bleeding and it feels like my face is on fire so im going to go to the walk in clinic at my local hospital to see if they can help.

Thanks again for your advice. My mother mention cloves but was unsure how to use them. Is it the oil that I need?

DO plenty of hot salt water rinses 3-4 times a day (teaspoon of salt in boiling water, don't scald yourself but use it quite hot). For bleeding, roll up a clean hanky and place it over the socket and bit firmly for 5-10 mins, the pressure should stop the bleeding. For painrelief altenate nurofen and paracetamol to maintain a more constant level of medication in your system, (ie paracetamol then 2 hours later ibuprofen, then a further 2 hours later paracetamol etc etc). I know some people don't believe in it but I really do recommend arnica tablets to speed up healing. If there is still an infection do try and be seen by either your own dentist or your gp to get some antibiotics. HTH

Sandcastles · 15/09/2006 12:40

I wouldn't put clove oil in the socket from the extracted tooth. Leave well alone until a dentist has looked at you. If you start poking around and putting stuff in your mouth you will cause an infection which will be much worse.

It sound like an infection/dry socket. Rinse with warm salt water, but gently. Don't eat naything hard/sticky. Do you smoke? If sao try to avoid as it will dry the socket & can be v v painful.

The pain will spread, as the nerve supplies to the teeth are all interconnected. Ring hospitl first, they may only offer more painkillers, you don't want a wasted trip. Your dentist has an obligation to see you with in 24 hours if you are in pain.

YummyMummy21, I have no advice but OWW!!! Lots and lots of sympathy, I hope it stops hurting soon, tooth ache is miserable.

ComeOVeneer · 15/09/2006 12:45

An infection in the socket or a dry socket won't have developed that quickly if you only had the tooth removed today. It takes a couple of days for the socket to become infected, likewise a dry socket (which is when the blood clot is lost from the socket leaving exposed bone).

YummyMummy21 · 15/09/2006 12:46

Thanks ComeOVeneer, I have been doing one salt rinse a day as the dentist told me not to rinse often as stops healing, but I will definatly increase the salt rinse.

I will go out and get some arnica in a bit

Thanks againg for your advice.

Is there any foods that I should be avoiding?
(not that I can physically eat much)

I had the tooth out 3:00pm yesterday, the infection is actually in my lower tooth and upper was removed. Also feeling pain in my throat and ear is this normal?

No foods to avoid but stick to soft stuff to make it easier on yourself (soups and smoothies are good , filling and healthy to help you heal). ALso avoid chewing on that side so you don't get anything stuck in the socket.

ComeOVeneer · 15/09/2006 12:58

Ah just got up to speed. You went in because of an infection associated with the lower wisdom tooth because it is partially erupted and has a flap of gum over it correct? He then proceeded to remove the upper tooth that was bitten down on the infected gum. It is a common thing to do (particularly as upper wisdom teeth are far easier to remove than lowers) but he should have given you antibiotics to clear the lower infection and recommended more frequent rinses to help clear the infection and prevent the socket from becoming infected.

I sympathise YM21, had my four wisdom teeth out many years ago, and was a horrible experience. The best thing I found for relieving the pain was a frozen bag of peas wrapped in a teatowel and held against my jaw. Hope you feel better soon!
