DS tonsillectomy...any ideas to help me?!

DS (4) is due to have his tonsills removed in 2 weeks. He had a previous bad experience in hospital 2 years ago and I'm unsure how to deal with the whole situation.

I know that he is likely to be quite uncomfortable for a a few days and want to be honest with him about this....but on the other hand I do not want to scare him (particularly in light of his previous bad experience).

Any thoughts how I should deal with this?

Thanks.

My dd had tonsils + adenoids out at same age, but was much smaller when in hosp before (iv antibiotics then) so luckily didn't remember I don't think.

Don't know what to suggest specifically, but for the hosp we got dd lodas of colouring books, activity toys and puzzles, and hair clips etc. This distracted for a bit, but mainly it was the other children in the ward who helped....it is a very common op so there were loads of kids going to theatres in relays when we arrived, waking up fine a little later, and so dd found this very reassuring and "normal". They all were friendly, so something that your ds can share would also be an idea. Also the fact that she couldn't eat the night before meant the very first thing she said when still groggy was "can I have my cornflakes now?!", so we realised she wasn't in too much pain.

Post-op, I bought a DVD player, and she had the thrill of lying on the sofa watchnig a film a day (pretty nice for a tired mum too ).

Hope the visit goes okay - I'll be thinking of you both.

Reliantrobin, my dd2 had her tonsils out this year (she's also 4). I think what is important is that people had said to her 'once you have your tonsils out you won't have a sore throat any more'. Well, of course when they wake up, they have a terrible sore throat!! I think that needs preparing for, but it doesn't last for too long.

Also, be prepared for him to need pain relief for a week or more, I think they generally feel 'below par'.

Make sure you have plenty of supplies of ice cream, yoghurt, ice lollies etc.

There is a great book you can get on amazon called 'Goodbye Tonsils' which we read a few times, although it's about an American child so some of the terminology needs adjusting if you're in the UK.

My dd2 was quite sick afterwards, and don't be alarmed if it looks 'bloody' as lots of blood can be swallowed apparently.

I can't think what else is helpful, just be prepared for him to feel a bit sorry for himself.

Oh, just remembered, our dd2 was offered (and went on) a tour of the unit the week before , so saw the anaesthetic room etc (even though she had surgery there before) I think that helped.

I hope that helps.

BTW, dd2 was like a different child after, she could eat, speak and do all sorts of things she hadn't done before, and is free of monthly antibios!!

Hi normalflora and anniediv,

Thanks v much for your replies and helpful tips.

How long were your DC's off school after the event? And do you think that I will need an extra pair of hands to look after my DD (age 2)once DS is out of hospital?

Thanks

RR

I was advised to keep my dd2 off preschool for 10 days, but that coincided with half term anyway. She dd seem a bit 'wrung out' definitely for the first week. I have dd1 and dd3, and managed okay with having them at home with her, to be honest it was a bit of distraction for her.

I hope your DS bounces back really quickly, I'm sure he'll be fine.

my son(he's 6) had his out 2 weeks ago. before the operation i told him that his throat would hurt a bit more than his usual tonsilitis but it will get better day by day. he was so understanding he even comforted me by saying that well at least it will be the last time of pain and after that it's goodbye tonsilits! the op went really well, there was no blood at all! he was able to eat a sandwich that night! the worst is waking up in the morning bc that's when the throat is the driest time of day. encourage him to drink and eat. my son felt alot better after 5/6 days!

Thanks choco and anniediv.

Have ordered the Goodbye tonsils book from Amazon - only 4 copies left so it must be tonsillectomy season!
