Thyroid cyst

I've just got back from the doctors after making an appointment about the lump in my throat. The Dr said that he thought it was a cyst (the referral letter says a thyroglossal cyst), and he's referred me for a scan within three weeks and then probably surgery to remove. He is a lovely Dr but the appointment felt very rushed and he seemed quite blasé about it. the idea of surgery has freaked me out a bit though!

I don't want to Google and scare myself, but has anyone got any experience that they could share?

I had a cyst on my left thyroid gland. I had a scan and fine needle biopsy and was told I didn't need surgery. After a year or so it really started to bother me and I had another biopsy which came out inconclusive (a 3 on the 1(benign) - 5(cancerous) scale), the cyst had grown too. So I had the surgery.

I was really worried about the surgery, but found it very straightforward in the end. Admitted to hospital in the morning, surgery around noon and one night in hospital to be monitored. I could go home the next day, having been signed off from work for 2 weeks. I felt ok, just tired and slept a lot, but had only minor pain - mainly a sore throat and some difficulties swallowing; nothing that lots of ice cream couldn't sort Smile. I am now in the process of finding the right medication dose for me as I am hypo.

Hope this helps a little; if you have any questions just ask.

I've got a cyst in my neck, well loads of little ones so it can't be drained. After I got my scan the doctor took blood tests to check my thyroid levels and referred me to the hospital. As my thyroid levels were normal the consultant at the hospital recommended that I leave the lump alone as it wasn't causing any problems. The only way I'd be able to get rid of the cysts totally would be to remove half my thyroid which I don't want to do. The consultant has said that if I feel the lump gets bigger to get back in touch and I'll be scanned again then possibly need to have the surgery to remove them.

Forgot to add, I had half my thyroid removed too.

Some years ago my SIL had a thyroglossal cyst removed. It was a bigger op than she'd been led to expect and she was upset about the scar - it's now faded to a long white line and tends not to be very noticeable. She had a night or two in hospital. Although she had about half her thyroid gland removed, she's never needed thyroxine supplements as he thyroid function has been normal throughout. . So it was really all okay for her, in the end.

Thanks all for the advice, it's reassuring to hear other people's experiences. One of my friends had quite serious thyroid cancer a few years ago which obviously skews your thoughts!

Can I ask if you know why blood tests aren't done first? I thought that checking thyroid function might be a first step.

Hope that you all stay healthy.
