Carotenemia: Does anybody have advice in how to treat this in a 9 month old?

Hi, my ds is showing signs of a yellow skin tone, no yellow eyes and I'm certain he is not ill. I found some information on the net about carotenemia which is caused by yellow foods and it seems is very common in infants starting on solids. Does anyone have advice as to what to do about it? The general advice is to avoid the foods causing the condition which includes;

human milk, carrots, squash, sweet potato, pumpkin, spinach, beans, egg yolks, corn and yams.

That pretty much includes all my ds eats! What alternatives can I offer?

I'd advise you not to try and diagnose anything like this yourself - get him checked out by the GP.

mum2funkydude I think I would take him along to gp just in case.

What about bannanas, or mixing the yellowish foods with potatoe, rice, pasta so he's having a bit less of the yellow foods

I would second wwb and take him to the GP. Although it is probably nothing serious, just because his eyes aren't yellow doesn't mean that nothing is going on.

I agree - GP first to make sure it isn't anything that should be investigated

definitely take little funkydude to the doctor, mum2. if it is this caroty thing then there are plenty of things to try iron-rich broccoli, spinach and other greens spring to mind.

definitely take him to the gp before you do anything

Thanks, I've phoned the HV she said to watch for, vomitting and smelly and dark poos, I'm sure his not sick. I'll keep a close eye on him. You can only see the tone difference when I put him next to me, I'm very pink next to him! Will go to gp and in the meantime change his diet a bit.
