GP says no ear infection, so why is DS still screaming out with ear pains?

This may seem a really thick question, but my DS2 is screaming out every 15 minutes or so with pains in his ears, yet on seeing a gp this afternoon, he doesn't have any kind of ear infection.
He is quiet atm, but has taken forever to settle tonight, & he keeps screaming out shouting "My ears, my ears!"
Has anyone got any idea as to what could be wrong?
Could it be his back teeth? (He is 3.5 btw)

It is just that I automatically assume bad ear pain = an ear infection of some kind & am at a bit of a loss. I hate him being in so much pain & me not being able to do anything to help.

He has had a bit of a cough over the last few days

his back teeth should be in by now....

LIZS · 13/09/2006 21:52

Could be referred pain from a blocked nose or teeth or congestion/fluid ( but not actual infection) within his ears creating pressure or noise. Nurofen should help either way.

pinkchampagne · 13/09/2006 21:53

I was kind of thinking that they should.
Do you think I should go back to doctors for a second opinion, or would I seem a silly paranoid mum?!
I trust that the gp looked into his ears & saw nothing, but he is in so much distress & clearly in a lot of pain.

I have been giving him calpol

i went to the docs once absolutely convinced i had an ear infection and he said what liz just said about pain from congestion. felt like an ear infection to me, but definitely wasn't. i feel for you, though, ear pain is awful.

aitch71 · 13/09/2006 21:58

as i recall, lying with my head on a pillow with a hot water bottle underneath it brought some comfort. and lemsips.

pinkchampagne · 13/09/2006 21:58

Oh right, I had not thought of that. Thanks, it could well be congestion, as he has had a cough & cold for a while.
I just hate to see him in so much pain & to feel so helpless.

sometimes pressure can build up, suck lots of little lollies, creates lots of swallowing, hold nose blow out.

keep going with calpol definitely

Medised much better for colds, if contains paracetamol and a antihistamine which dries up their noses. It also conks them out for a good nights sleep.

when ds had an ear infection first doctor said ears were fine, went back next day and saw another who couldn't believe previous gp had missed ds's "raging ear infection".

pinkchampagne · 13/09/2006 23:53

Oh blimey, really, dinny?
All is quiet now, but have had a tough couple of hours. Hope all improves. Really hate it when my boys are ill.

Might be teeth related - i always got really bad ear ache when I had teeth growing.

poor boy I do feel for him. My mum used to put body temp olive oil in my ear to help a bit. warm it in your hand so it doesn't get too hot and then pour it in.

agree with dinny, go to another Dr.

Dr's missed my sons, apparently it was clear but the next day we went back and it was bright red.

foxinsocks · 14/09/2006 10:59

dd used to get screaming pain in her ears when she had bad glue ear. Sometimes congestion alone can cause terrible pain.

However, if you are still worried and the screaming continues, I don't think it would be out of order to go back to the GP and ask for another opinion.

Would also second the medised as I think it has a decongestant element (that prob does nothing for the ears but may ease the congestion in his nose which should make him start feeling a bit better).

See a homoeopath. GPs have tunnel vision.
