Bugger :( Another ovarian cyst.

nikki1978 · 23/07/2014 21:16

So I had a large (11cm) cyst on my right ovary when I was pregnant with DS 8 years ago. It wasn't to do with the pregnancy as I had felt some pains from the November and it was discovered in June when I was 6 weeks (GP thought I was nearer 12 weeks as I had a big lump protuding from my abdomen. I was in pain on and off at this point then it got much worse and I ended up in hospital for a week while they decided what to do. Ended up having it drained with a massive needle through my stomach and there was about a litre of bloody fluid.

They rescanned 6 months after the birth and the sac had gone (they were worried it would refill).

Anyway about a month ago for about a week in the middle of my cycle I had period type pains and pressure in my lower abdomen and kept needing to wee but only a bit was coming out. I made a gp appt and she said to have an ultrasound to check. Then the issues went away so I was assuming nothing would be found but had it done yesterday and a 6cm cyst was found. The sonographer thought it was on the left ovary but couldn't tell really as it is hiding behind my womb. She said it looks mainly fluid filled and isn't concerned but says I need to be referred because of the size and my history (they will likely want to take it out).

I suffer from health anxiety and the cancer worry is floating around again (like it did last time). Also I have never had an op under GA so am starting to feel nervy about that. I always worry I won't wake up :(

Anyway not sure what the point of this post is. Just feeling a bit rubbish and am annoyed that I will be anxious all summer holidays now.

I am seeing the GP tomorrow to get a referral to the gynaecologist. I have private health cover but have PCOS or anything relating to it as an exemption (I was never actually diagnosed with this - the blood test said yes but the scan said no and they never looked further even though I do have some symptoms but not the irregular periods).

try not to worry. Cysts are VERY common and you don't fit the profile for ovarian cancer!

6cm is not big- they allow cysts up to 5cm in women post menopause ( when cancer is more common) - and do 'watchful waiting'.

Yours will prob go away and worst case would be expirated with keyhole surgery if anything.

nikki1978 · 24/07/2014 15:11

Thanks pinkfrocks. Been to the GP today to get my referral and it turns out the scan showed 2 cysts (one 8x5 and one 5x2cm). They think they are coming from the left ovary but can't see the ovaries (weird?) so unsure. Anyway they said I should see the gynae in 4-6 weeks and they will rescan and decide what to do.

She said if I feel any severe pain to head straight to A&E in case of rupture or torsion.

Two years ago I had pelvic pain. Went to GP, had an ultrasound. Turned out my left Fallopian tube was full of cysts. I also had a cyst on my right ovary. I had a laparoscopy to check it out, it was fine but my Fallopian tube couldn't be saved so it was removed. Also had the other cyst drained.

The op was fine and I recovered very quickly. Like your though, I suffer from health anxiety and in the months before, I had tortured myself with fears of cancer etc. I got myself into such a state I became severely depressed and am still on antidepressants now.

It's wise to get it checked out but keep it in prospective. Cysts are incredibly common and it's highly unlikely to anything sinister, follow it up but be kind to yourself, sending hugs xx

Trooperslane · 24/07/2014 16:14

I don't want to worry you - and you shouldn't - but get to a&e straight away if you have severe pain.

I had a 10cm one and the pain was excruciating - I was totally fine as was baby but I needed morphine and fast Smile

nikki1978 · 24/07/2014 18:50

Thanks ladies. Troopers I had one before and had severe pain and had to call an ambulance (under docs orders). I wasn't allowed morphine as was pregnant. It was awful and i lost a stone in the week I was in hospital as I threw up everything I tried to eat. I remember that pain well so will get straight to a&e if it reoccurs I promise you!

No advice but you have my sympathy, I have had cysts since I was pregnant with dd2 ( almost 9 years ago ), none of mine are big enough to have surgery but are big enough to cause a lot of pain Sad.

nikki1978 · 24/07/2014 19:06

That seems odd marne - you would think they would remove them anyway if they are painful. Although if they keep reoccuring they would probably remove the ovaries which is a fairly drastic step.

Hi, I've had a large cyst in the past on right ovary which ruptured, the pain was awful had to call an ambulance. Turned out that there was another big one in there too which I had removed a couple of months later. Before the op I had a mirena fitted.

This was about 18 years ago, 2 kids later and I am having pains and lots of bleeding. GP reckons its fibriods but I'm really concerned that its ovarian cancer.i have pain in my leg a lot and round my ovaries. GP won't send me for scan, says she is doing watchful waiting even though I have private healthcare. She has put in another mirena which was agony on my right hand side, so painful. I've been bleeding ever since the fitting, about 4 weeks now.

I don't have the main symptoms of ovarian cancer like inability to eat or bloating etc. Just this pain in my leg which is worrying me. I have bad OCD and health anxiety and have had to go back on citalopram a week or so ago.

Bloody nightmare. Sorry for anyone else going through this.

Anyone else get/had leg pain?

nikki1978 · 24/07/2014 23:09

Watchful waiting is crap if you haven't seen what is in there! Can you see another doctor? I got hip pain last time but cysts can give you leg pain.

lucjam · 24/07/2014 23:17

I have to go for my 6ish week mirena check next week, going a week early because of holidays. So when I am there I am going to ask again.

Annoying thing is that she originally referred me but because we have a new health insurance co at work who require 5 years notes which is taking ages, she then offered to refer me on nhs and I said don't worry ill wait for the approval and go private. I had a telephone appt with her last week and chased it and she said she won't refer me now we will watchful wait and see if the mirena makes any difference. Am really hacked off.

littleSpud · 24/07/2014 23:19

I have a possible ovarian cyst too

Had lower tummy pain on and off last few weeks, in my right ovary and doctor thinks it's that

I have been referred for a scan suffer from bad anxiety too so been fearing all sorts Confused ... I had a baby 15 weeks ago so I'm telling myself if there was anything bad it would probably have been picked up on my scans...right?

Strange thing is the pain got quite bad toward end of last week (hence going doc) but has tailed off last few days almost to nothing, has anyone else had that?

nikki1978 · 24/07/2014 23:52

Are your periods back yet littlespud? My issues seem to be worse miscible. Or at least they did last month. Will see what this month brings.

littleSpud · 24/07/2014 23:57

I started taking the contraceptive pill when I was 8 weeks post birth so haven't had a "real" period. Just a bleed during my pill-free week

Can that make a difference then, where you are in your cycle?

BelleOfTheBorstal · 25/07/2014 00:11

What kind of leg pain does it cause? I am being investigated for PCOS at the moment.

Pinkfrocks · 25/07/2014 09:07

lucjam- you should insist- and I mean insist that you are referred to a gynae using your medical insurance. Your dr can't refuse this request.

I had 'watchful waiting' of a cyst and that meant scans ( privately) every 4 months for 2 years.

You need to chivvy up your GP.

nikki1978 · 25/07/2014 10:10

Belle I assume it is where the cyst presses on a nerve so a deep achey pain?

I am feeling nervy today. I remembered that I had pelvic inflammatory disease 5 years ago after catching gonorrhea and the infection spread into my womb and possibly further. Was quite a bad infection. Googling it I have found that pid is a risk factor for ovarian cancer :(

OP posts:
littleSpud · 25/07/2014 11:09

Aww nikki don't google!

nikki1978 · 25/07/2014 11:54

I know Google is a bugger!

OP posts:
BelleOfTheBorstal · 25/07/2014 20:14

Pelvic Inflammatory Disease. Horrible thing. On the leg pain, thank you for the answer, probably means that my all over legso aching or the weird vibrating pain in my left calf are unrelated, as I imagine a nerve being pressed pain would be more stabby.
Hope everyone gets some form of relief/treatment.
Had anyone tried going on a low g.i diet in order to control the symptoms?

lucjam · 27/07/2014 20:45

How is everyone today?Mylegpain is now also hip and back pain too.not sure if that is a good sign as it might mean that its all due to back issues rathern than ovarian cancer.

Pink I'm at the Dr on Tuesday so I shall insist that she refers me. Will cry if necessary!

littleSpud · 28/07/2014 16:43

I'm ok

Got my scan on Friday

Weird thing is my pain has completely gone last few days. Has anyone else ever had that? Ie Where it comes and goes

Slou88 · 01/08/2014 19:38

3 weeks ago I came on my period after being off for 1 week. I went to the dr concerned n got sent for blood tests, they came back clean and then I got sent for an ovarian cancer blood, which 1 week later still haven't come back!!! Argh!!!! I'm getting real back ache like I struggle to pick my 9mo up Hmm sharp stabbing pain in my left hip/back area. I'm hoping this is a cyst but will wait n see what my scan shows in 4 weeks! I must say hot water bottle & camomile tea with honey in are good for cysts and have been helping me loads oh and lots of painkillers haha

nikki1978 · 01/08/2014 19:48

How did your scan go littlespud?

Yes I used a hot water bottle lots last time I had a cyst slou88. Since I wasn't allowed much pain relief being pregnant it was all I could use and helped quite a lot.

I am still having no pain although I can feel the bulge of the cysts when my bladder is full now. Still waiting for gynaecologist appt.

My gallbladder is playing up currently. They found stones a few months ago but since it wasn't inflamed I decided to not have it out yet. I wonder if I can have both things done in one op?!

OP posts:
littleSpud · 01/08/2014 21:25

Hi all I went for my scan, after days of no pain at all. and they found nothing, everything looks normal

The sonographer said it was likely that I had had one that had burst / disappeared

CEJ86 · 23/02/2019 07:14

Sorry for hijacking someone else's post but I'm new to Mumsnet and still working out how to use it.....

I have 2 cysts on my right ovary I wanted to get them removed via private healthcare as I started to pay for private healthcare on the 20th of February but was diagnosed with ovarian cysts on the 17th of February which meant that I was just shy of getting it done by private health care. recently I've been having similar problems but on my left side , stomach pain and hip pain if I go back to my GP and they find a cyst on my left ovary does anybody know if I will be covered on my private health care with my left ovary or will it still go down as previous due to my right ovary having cysts?
