Heart murmur in my 6 year old.

My ds1 aged 6 yrs has been diagnosed with a heart murmur. I have been told not to worry untill he has had a scan at the cardiologist department to see if it is serious or not.
Any mn's out there with children diagnosed with this? What is the worst case scenario. I am not worrying too much but would like to know more.
Thanks.

try not to worry i've had one all my life dr says it's nothing to worry about. i can link some info if you want but don't want you to worry.

I had a heart murmur diagnosed a few years back and was terrified, but apparently the majority aren't a problem and it is just the noise of the blood travelling normally(or something?), I had a scan and everything is fine. X

Moosh - the likelihood is that it's an innocent murmer. Some children have odd heart noises even with a completely normal heart. Some children just have them when they've been poorly and they come and go.

The heart scan he'll have is called an ECHO and it's basically an ultrasound of the heart (like you have of the baby when pg). They usually do an ECG too. If he's normally well and active the worst it will probably be is a small hole and these often heal up by themselves. Try not to worry.

Let us know how you get on. You too ggg.

me too - also skips beats/races etc - but after monitoring it thay said consider it normal for you

MrsApronstrings · 12/09/2006 18:37

sotty, meant to say.. hope this is true for both of you and good luck at the consultants

My neice has Just been told she has a heart murmur, she is 4. The Doctor told her not to worry as it is very common and children can grow out of it.

nulnulcat · 12/09/2006 21:07

i have had a heart murmer all my life and the only time i had a problem was when i was in labour, i see a specialist every couple of years but it doesnt affect me in the slightest

Two of mine have a heart murmur. I'm told they are completely harmless.

geogteach · 12/09/2006 21:24

DS1 has one, picked up on a routine asthma check, it is innocent but you do need it checked out, he couldn't have a general anaestetic he needed for somethingelse until it was checked. I also developed one when pregnant with DD, hadn't had problems before or since.

Charellie · 12/09/2006 21:25

My dt1 aged 4 years was diagnosed with a heart murmur a couple of months ago. Apparently they don't necessarily occur at birth and they can get them anytime.

As part of the investigations she had an x-ray, echo and ECG.

They found that she had some leakages in the vessels in her heart which are completly harmless and the ECG showed a normal heart trace.

So, she has an innocent murmur and I've been told she can be treated as normal and can run around, have a tantrum without me worrying.

I think most murmurs turn out to be innocent and if not they can monitor or treat it.

Hope you get a good result

moosh · 13/09/2006 08:56

Thankyou everyone. She said because he seems actively normal, growing well e.t.c. that it would probably be harmless. I think it is dp over reacting that has turned me from being rather calm into a worrying nightmare.
Ggglimpopo, he was in for checkup on his foreskin as he may have a circumcision (sorry bout spelling) and she was doing a routine check, heart, blood pressure, weight height e.t.c. I will definately not worry until he has had the scan and results. Thhanks.

If you have an echo, it is truly an amazing scan. You get to see the heart pumping (it sort of looks like an ultrasound but of the heart) - if your boy is interested in that sort of biology, you may find that he quite enjoys seeing his heart beating!

foxinsocks · 13/09/2006 09:16

I meant the older ones (moosh's and ggg's boys) who have the scan - I was transfixed by it!
