Lower back pain - advice?

Have always had a bit of a temperamental back - it has a tendency to go leaving me in agony, but in between those times it has been OK.

Recently, however, if I do anything even vaguely energetic (oh puhleease!) I get a contant nagging ache that quickly escalates to my back screaming at me for me to stop. Example, ds2 is asleep so I resisted the pull of MN and went in the garden to do a bit of tidying up - bit of pruning, sweeping up the patio etc. I lasted half an hour and I've had to stop because my back is hurting too much. Yesterday I cut the lawn (only a small garden) and I was nearly in tears raking up the grass cuttings as it felt like my back was just going to give out.

Is there anything I can do? It's beginning to really get me down as even when the mind is willing (rare occasions I feel like getting the vac out and doing a spot of housework) the flesh is weak.

Get yourself to a physiotherapist!

Also, do Pilates.

I too have a 'back'. I find that a lot of niggles or escalating aches are usually a warning that something is about to go, and when it does it's fairly drastic. So, I repeat - go see a physio!

Or an osteopath. But personally I don't rate Chiropractic.

I have recently been seeing a Chiropractor for a twisted pelvis, which is apparently quite common after childbirth. It is much better now but was a constant nagging ache much like you describe, although I don't remember it shooting up my back, mostly my problems came trying to lift DS2 in and out of his cot.

Sorry hadn't quite finished, you were looking for advice. Much the same as Prettycandles, see someone, I personally find my Chiropractor good (was recommended to me and has a good reputation in the area), it's probably a matter of personal choice.

Osteopathy all the way.....

kiwisbird · 31/03/2004 19:53

osteopath
regular sessions solved all my chronic - acute and recurrent back pain, thoroughly worth the time and effort.

i'm in a similar situation, combination of osteopath and yoga really works for me

SoupDragon · 02/04/2004 11:14

Osteopath to sort the problem out, Pilates to strengthen all the muscles that support your back to help prevent it going again.

Might sound stupid Marthamoo but do you need to lose any weight? When I had bad lower back pain after I had ds an osteopath told me to lose weight and when I did the pain eased a lot. The pain is back now (oops, pardon the unintentional pun) I've got post baby lard but I hope losing weight will work again this time too. Sympathies, horrible isn't it?

www, do you mind me asking how much weight you had to lose?
I'm about half a stone overweight and keep getting lower back pain, my stomach muscles are really slack and I wondered if that was the cause
