Where can I get a Health MOT?

I have been rundown a fair bit, with alarming night sweats, alarming in that they just seem to happen out of the blue in the last year, on and off, I should say these aren't hot flushes or anything as I'm a bloke! Saw the doctor, he did a blood test which turned up nothing.

So now what? I've been on the Berocca, recommended by the pharmacist. It's good, but he suggested that as I had little faith in my doctor (and you can't change doctors!) I should go to A&E. Thing is, A&E is very good at giving you a thorough run through and turning up stuff that others have missed, but I feel a bit lame saying, hey, I am run down could you check me up?

Is there anywhere that can give you a check over, either free or not too pricey? It seems the Germans are better at these kind of health spas than we are, we just specialise in facials and head massages and so on.

How old are you ? Some areas do NHS screenings for certain age groups and certain conditions, otherwise you can pay Bupa, Nuffield et al to do one. Of course you can change gp !

Is it an accident?
Is it an emegency?

If not, don't go to A&E.

Either try a different GP or pay through BUPA.

Of course you can change doctors! You don't even need a good reason!

Okay, but not within the same practice, if it is part private. I've been with them since birth, but it's a situation where it is 'policy' not to allow you to switch to another doctor within that practice, of course you can go to another practice but then I'm not sure what happens if you get another duffer...

In a few years you will be able to choose your GP, I understand.

You can already choose your gp . Private or not. See another one at the same practice , just book an appointment with someone else. Don't know where you live but that sounds very odd if in UK.

Thanks LIZS, is that a recent thing? It's just, I remember asking to change GP about two years ago, and got short shrift, saying it wasn't their 'policy' to allow that, and if you want another GP, hop off to another practice across town. It seemed like they ran it like their own fiefdom.

You don't have to re-register with a different Dr in the same practice, just ring up and say "Hi, I'm registered with Dr so-and-so but I'd like an appt with anyone but, please"

I did this for donkeys years at my old practice as didn't like or trust the guy I was registered with, but got on fine with all the others.

I am registered with a GP in my practice. I've seen her once in 17 years because she's an unfeeling cow, and that's only because she was rostered for the emergency calls that day.

I take any appt with any doc available but they must check who I've seen most as the vast majority of my appts end up with my favourite GP.

I'm lucky if I ever get to see the same person twice in a row. Always different doctors each time.

If you're over 40 you may be entitled to NHS Health Check, which I saw our local Boots are doing.
