is absolutely horrible by the way

I have never heard dd3 scream like it

and the nurses told me they had had the worst day ever trying to give it as it is so painful

be warned

dd2 is having it today.

i'd rather she have a painful jab than all the needles and pain she'd go through if she had pneumoccocal meningitis, i really would.

Marina · 12/09/2006 10:42

Sorry she had such a horrid time Enid but like Expat, I think this is one immunisation they should have introduced into the UK years ago IMO.

YellowFeathers · 12/09/2006 10:43

Oh great!
Think dh will be taking ds on his own then.

Thanks for the heads up.

eidsvold · 12/09/2006 10:46

I'm with expat - better a little pain than the horrible reality that is pneumoccocal meningitis.

expatinscotland · 12/09/2006 10:47

DH has been instructed to give DD1 Calpol about 45 mins. before.

Elibean · 12/09/2006 10:54

How old do they need to be for Prevenar? dd2 is due late November...had thought she'd probably not be old enough for it this year.
GP told me Pneumovax not available till November for dd1, and then only privately

Enid · 12/09/2006 10:55

oh so do I expat (am happy sheep in the vaccine stakes)

but it shocked me as the other triple jab didnt really bother her too much

this one is a bit yucky

here in Aus my dd2 was a babe when she got hers - standard part of vaccination schedule.

dd2 got her infant pneumococcal at 2,4 and 6 months - now part of vaccination schedule here in Qld Australia - will have another booster at 2 also.

Dd1 - having had most of her jabs in the Uk did not get this BUT as she was at risk and it was not part of the vaccination schedule at that time - she had the prevenar jab just after she was 2.

amyjade · 12/09/2006 11:10

It didn't really bother Dd2, she screamed her head off when she had the new menC/hib booster apparently the menC is the most painful.
but believe me it's better than watching your child have a lumber puncture.

expatinscotland · 12/09/2006 11:22

Exactly, amy!

Am nervous about it for DD2, but I had to fight to get this for her before her 'target' time.

grannygoose · 12/09/2006 11:43

oh crap @:>?< - not looking forward to that then... Did contemplate skipping it, but general consensus seems to be that it is worth having?

expatinscotland · 12/09/2006 13:21

Well, it was more painful than the 5 in 1, that's for sure.

BUT, as amy pointed out, better than the needles and pain of the disease, not to mention its possible outcomes.

Amy, THANK YOU SO MUCH for having the courage of sharing your story. Am so, so, incredibly sorry for what you went through.

I hope you realise it's entirely possible you saved some childrens' lives by sharing your loss and making us all more aware.

((((HUGS))))

You're one incredible mummy.

Our surgery say it won't be avaliable until nov too. Ds2 will be exactly the age DD1 was when she got meningitis so i'm going to make sure he gets it asap. DH and I agreed that we will pay for the other 3 to have it privatly if the gp won't do it as they aren't 'target' age.
