I had a IV canula for induction/antibiotics when in labour with DC2 nearly two years ago. I naively agreed to let the student doctor, who was doing her week's observation, insert it.
She tried the right wrist but messed up, or at least failed to get the canula in. I'm no wimp but I could have cried with the pain. I distinctly remember my toes twitching in response - it was awful! The mw told her to try the left but again she struggled. I can't remember whether she carried in or the mw took over and it went n on the second attempt.
Right up until pushing, my left wrist was the most painful aspect of my labour. I remember having to hold my arm up through contractions to ease it. The IV actually fell out in the shower the following morning.
My wrist was very sore and I mentioned it to the community mw. I could feel something about the length of a strand of vermicelli in there (creative comparison!!) and when it was still as sore after ten days she sent me in for an X-ray. We all had a look at the picture and it was decided that the site had thrombosed and that it would soon be back to normal.
A couple of weeks later I received a message asking me to go back in. It seems there actually was about a millimetre of plastic left in the vein. I was quite the medical freak but was advised that it would probably be best to leave it be. I do have all this in writing (somewhere!) Over the last couple of weeks though my wrist is becoming sore again. Doesn't help that it's my writing hand either.
Anyone experienced anything like this? I'm starting to panic. If it's sore now, what will it be like if I leave it? I've also made the classic mistake of Googling and have convinced myself it could migrate to lungs/heart (excuse my biological ignorance).
Help! Should I march to my no doubt disbelieving GP and demand a second opinion?
