My mom has had sore, rough gums for a few months now and has completed 2 courses of antibiotics and been using a special mouthwash yet the gums are no better ,obviously she is getting increasingly concerned about losing her teeth ,any ideas as to what has caused this? as she regulary attends the dentist, flosses, brushes etc and leads a healthy lifestyle and diet.
Could a deficiency of some sort cause these symptoms?
Any information would be appreciated
Tia

This is a difficult one to diagnose without seeing/ more specific info.
Does she smoke / ex smoker, have diabetes, takes any drugs...
has she been told she has gum disease has she had treatment, if so what sort.
She would possiblybenifit from sheeing a hygienst to get some thorough cleaning, pay privately if necessary. sorry can't offer more help without all the info. hth

No she doesn't smoke .not diabetic and not on any meds.
As far as i know she was told she had Gingivitus and was prescribed the antibiotics and mouthwash.

Difficult to say without actually seeing what the gums look like. The gums (and mouth in general) are affected by many things from viral disease (chickenpox for example), or trauma (eg from dentures, sharp food), reaction to various drugs(as louismummy said in particular for diabetes, blood pressure etc), then there are autoimmune diseases (a bit too complex and involved to go into here). Is there any white areas? If so I would investigate the possibility of thrush or a disease called Lichen Planus (which commonly affects middle aged women). Nutritional deficiencies can show up in the mouth also.

As you can see there are many reasons for syptoms in the gums. My best advice is if her dentist can't seem to diagnose and sucessfully treat her, she asks to be referred to the nearest dental hospital/oral surgery dept etc to be seen by a specialist. HTH
