Wisdom teeth questions - any dentists?

I went to the dentist today because I have some tooth pain first time ever in my life so I was a bit worried. He said that I have a wisdom tooth that is coming through, only it never will because of the angle its at, it will hit my back molar before it can come out - make sense?

He prescribed me some antibiotics and said the pain might well be because the gum is inflamed where the tooth is under the skin. But it might not be, so what if its not? He said the wisdom tooth would never come through and if I have more problems i should come back. Can they take it out if its in the gum? My boyfriend had his out recently but it was coming in and causing him pain - would I have the same thing he did?

I am a bit skeptical about the anti-biotics working tbh.

Yes they can take them out if they haven't broken through the skin. I have the same problem with my bottom wisdom teeth, they have not come through but I have a flap of gum ontop of them which gets infected AB always work for me but as this happens ever 6 months or so I try to solve it in other ways. Mine have been x rayed and the root is apparently to close to the nerves in my chin, so removing them may cause some nerve damage. I would say if it happens again and you can get them removed do so. I only have to go 24hrs without brushing my teeth and I get an infection.
I asked for advice other than salt rinses on here last time it happened and was recommend Corsody which is available as a mouthwash or toothpaste. It can cause temporary stainning of teeth so I got the tooth paste and only used it on my back gums and managed to get rid of the infection without ABs I would highly recommend it

I had mine growing sideways and had them all out in one go. Day ward at hospital though.

I had this toobut mine broke through before they got stuck. I had trouble on and off for ages.Eventuallymentioned it to the dentist when it was acting up on appointment day, and he said because they were impacted I'd always have trouble.Ended up having all 4out, not very pleasant but haven't had any trouble since, if only I'dknown it'd have had it done sooner.

Thanks for the replies. I am very nervous about having it out, I can't afford time off uni really, oh well

I will definately try that toothpaste albatros - can you buy it in boots?

Corsodyl is a gel which you get at the pharmacy counter - got mine at our local Boots.

I had this with my two bottom ones although they didn't cause much pain. My dentist advised I get them all out as they were likely to cause trouble if I got run down/pg.
I had all 4 out on a Thursday afternoon and was fine for work on Monday so you needn't miss too much time off.

great. i've been ignoring the fact that my bottom widom teeth are attempting to gro up but are lodged against my molars and won't come out properly. the re both poking out a little with a flap of gum over and one has started to hurt.... more in the gum above it though than the tooth.... sounds like ui have an infection and i'm bf so don't want to heve to take abs.... must try that toothpaste

anbesol gel from chemist or clove oil works quite well.i had all 4 impacted and ended up on tylex painkillers but they're very strong and i couldnt drive on them.had all 4 out at hospital and was on tylex and ibuprofen for a few days but they've been alot better since and healed quickly.clove oil tastes horrible but numbs the gums, especially good if the teeth are completely under the gum still.anbesol numbs the gums too.orajel dental gel does the same.best to try the gels etc first before tablets as you need to have a clear head to concentrate but if all else fails ask the doctor for some strong painkillers such as tylex if you can take them ok with other tablets you;'re on.they do work really well but make sure you take as few as you can manage on as they do make you woosy and sleepy.good luck.i was dreading my operation but to be honest, after the first couple of days the jaw was alot more bearable than all the pain i had before the operation.

I had the same prob, and am allergic to the abs that you can take when bf...but had 2 taken out in hospital with lots of local anaesthetic...took less than 20 mins...felt whoozy for the rest of the day but was fine.
