anyone else with an anaemic child?

My dd2 (aged 2) has anaemia and is on prescribed iron drops. I am wondering if anyone else has experienced this. She has been very prone to infection, has been very grumpy and lethargic. Now she has colour in her cheeks, loads of energy and is so much happier. I am concerned that when the iron drops stop (which they will as soon as her iron levels are normal) then she will decline again - she doesn't really like many iron-rich foods. Has anyone found their child less prone to getting ill after taking iron supplements? What happens when you no longer supplement?

TIA!

My dd had iron drops at about the same age, we found out she was anaemic after blood tests to see why her hair all fell out they said it was to blame she was on the drops for about a year then we just stopped them, she is a perfectly healthy 6 year old, who to be honest is rarely ill anymore! she was quite a sickely child.

Thanks for your reply, chlochlo. Poor dd! When you say she was sickly, do you mean before she was on iron or after? They docs are pretty strict these days and will not prescibe iron once dd2 is no longer anaemic.

I'm worried about dd2 getting so poorly again, and I am also worried about her bringing horrible bugs home to baby ds.

She was sickely before iron drops she was at a day nursery and picked up any bug going and to be honest she did look ill she was a pale child with only a few tufts of hair. She never had any more blood tests you could just tell she didn't need them.

Thanks again. Dd2 has loads of hair, but she did look pale and was very unsettled, she's totally changed now. She's going to see the paedetrician next week so will see what they say about further tests etc.
