Cellulitis? Septicemia? Scan results?

How likely is cellulitis to get bad?

My mum was diagnosed with it 2 weeks ago & has had 4 lots of anti-biotics (clarynthmyacin, doxycycline, fluxocillin & a penicillin)

Today she was admitted for IV antibiotics & a 'whole body' scan at 6pm this evening

I don't feel this is good at all

Your thread title says septicaemia - has anyone suggested that may be a possibility? Obviously, sepsis (septicaemia) can be very serious indeed if it doesn't respond to treatment, but I would try not to worry about that until after the scan.

I have heard of people being hospitalised for cellulitis, but no more than that. Hopefully, someone medical who actually knows about these things will come along to advise you shortly.

Flowers.

Katy. It's very common for patients with cellulitis to be admitted - skin infections often don't respond well to oral antibiotics . Obviously I can't comment on reason for scan etc but this doesn't necessarily mean something 'bad' and out of the ordinary is going on.

You're not having a great time of it at the moment are you poor thing.

My mum just had cellulitis recently. she is 83 and was really very I'll with it, delirium and all sorts. she spent a week in hospital doing the IV antibiotics, and had CT scan. Once the ABs took a hold she got much better, very fast. before that, it was rather scary. Hope something similar for your mum too.

She had an arterial bypass in her leg at easter

Then she got the cellulitus & now they say we have to drain it & she is having an op tomorrow

I have had enough

OK I am home now & slightly more coherent

The scan showed that the arterial graft she had in her leg at Easter is fine & the Aorta & Femoral Arteries that were bypassed 5 years ago are also fine.

The problem is (possibly) that the urine infection she had a few weeks ago, sort of migrated to the site of the arterial bypass and there is an abscess in the tissue next to the artery.

I think

& it needs draining & packing and being left to heal from the inside outwards, so there isn't any trapped infection.

We now have the problem that I have a Dad with Small Cell Lung Cancer - 1 week into his first (of 6) cycle of chemo a mum who will have an open wound which needs dressing & an inability to rest when the floor needs cleaning or there is a meal to cook - the doctor looked a little concerned at the situation

She had surgery this morning and it seems to be fine

I think care is unlikely as my Mum is generally fit & well this is just a blip

As yet we don't know how bad my dad will get

They are getting a friend in to help with cleaning/ironing but I doubt they will go for more than the district nurse to dress her leg until she can drive again

Well I'm a bit open mouthed atm

My mum discharged herself from the hospital this afternoon & I had to go and collect her. She was really cross when I said I couldn't push her wheelchair out of the hospital

The consultant said she was to stay in until Monday - I am so upset

I think you need to get really tough with your mum - I know she wants to be with your dad, but she will be no use if she gets really ill through not taking care of herself. Its not easy to go ballistic at your parents, but I've had to do it and eventually they listen

My godparents are coming down tomorrow to talk to them; I am beyond it

I'm close to telling them to get on with it by themselves. I cannot care for 2 of them; I'm not physically strong enough

I made the hospital write down how unhappy I was to take her home & the HCA said she knew my mum from the last time she was in & she won't take care of herself properly
