Alcohol help

I think I've finally realised that my drinking is becoming more than just 'social' and is now a problem - memory problems, drinking on my own, inability to actually stop, interfering with family and work life, sugar craving.

Other than AA, what other help is out there? I saw my GP a couple of months ago and she was quite unhelpful. I'm thinking of seeing a hypnotherapist. Has anyone had any help in this way?

(PS I was a sort-of regular poster on MN years ago when my daughter was born and found all your advice so helpful during that amazing time - after a gap of about 3 years, I'm hoping that MN can help again, perhaps in slightly less positive circumstances for me! Thank you all)

There are some really helpful and inspiring threads on Relationships (don't know how to link). I'm sure you will find some really useful advice there. Good luck.

There is an organisation called Aquarius my local one is currently in the process of changing their name to 'recovery near you' which is linked with NACRO - don't let that put you off.

They are fantastic. The deal with alcohol, drug and gambling addictions.

I started to go to a group called 'cutting down your drinking' - and it is just that, you record how much you have had to drink each week and talk about cutting down and swap tips.

So some people alternate a can of strong lager with a normal can.

Some people add a bit of water to wine.

Everyone sets their own target for the following week, or if you don't feel able to do that you can just monitor.

One thing that seems common is when you start counting the units then the units go up for a week or two.

As well as various groups (activities such as gardening, music, art) you are appointed a key worker/counselor

If you want to stop then they have detox programmes, for those who are physically dependent you have to have inpatient treatment but there is also a home detox that takes 7 days using librium to counteract side effects.

You continue to see a counselor and if you want to you can then reintroduce alcohol in an appropriate way. So for me this means I drink Friday and Saturday evenings. For some people it is nothing at all, for others it is the occasional drink.

AA is a cult. AA will tell you abstinence is the only way and you can't control drink it controls you.

Several people at Aquarius have gone to AA and found it not for them, in at least 2 cases they said they came out and felt they needed a drink.
