Yesterday my mum phoned me at about 6pm crying saying she had been in agony for about 1hr, she had been to the shops at about 3.30pm & on her way home she started to get pain in her right hand side & her back, she got in & went to bed as it started to get worse, she then ended up crawling to the bathroom in agony to be sick & finally phoned me at 6pm.

I phoned an ambulance straight away because i new it was serious because she hates doctors, hospitals anything like that & will not go unless it is major.

Anyway she was taken to A&E where we stayed till 11.45pm she had 3 x rays including having to drink some die stuff & she had lots of morphine because the pain was that intensse she was screaming, it was scary

I then went up with her to the surgical assesment unit where they said she would stay until moved to a ward.

She has been pain free since about 2am & they said it is a kidney stone & the immense pain was because it was working its way down.

She has come home today with strong pain killers.

Has anyone had this? Will she get anymore pain? should she go to work? she says she wants to go back tomorrow evening (she is a senior carer) i told her she is not to go back

I am very worried about her & it really hit home at how much she struggles & i started to feel bad for some unknown reason, i only had 2 hrs sleep & am shattered.

my mum had this once. v painful and scary. she passed the stone and never had another.

Make sure your mum drinks lots of clear fluids

Scoobydooooo · 10/09/2006 15:37

Thanks mb she is drinking lots.

the doctor actually said to her that it is worse for men than women for passing it out yuuuk & that some women have actually said the pain is worse than childbirth i thought child birth was the worst but my god if thats the case i never ever want it.

ouch for her, i remember seeing trauma i think, where the dr said the pain was worse than childbirth poor her.

jamiesam · 10/09/2006 15:39

Scoobydooo - my mum had several operations for kidney stones (this is going back some time now). She said that the pain was far worse than labour (and she did that 5 times) - loads of sympathy to your mum.

When she had her last op, there was some talk of new laser technology which might 'blast' the things intol smaller pieces so easier to pass.

Do you know what the hospital advised her? Not sure if they feel it's small enough for her to pass and so surgery not needed? And surely they advised her when to go back to work? I would assume not until the thing is passed?

I had an episode once, and it was awful. Like childbirth in that it seemed to come in waves like contractions and I couldn't get comfortable.

I remember crawling on my hands and knees to the toilet thinking I was going to die!
Then it just stopped.

I then got a urinary infection, saw the Dr and he said it sounded like I had passed a stone...The size of a grain of sand!

Eeek!

Wouldn't want to have to deal with anything larger than that, and I have seen pics of how big they can get.

Scoobydooooo · 10/09/2006 15:45

Hmm well i came home because i was shattered & had to come back to look after the kids as dp is in a golfing thing today.

But my sister landed from greece at 4am & she went home had a bath & went o see mum at about 7am, they then turned up at my house at 12pm

So i was not there when she spoke to the doctor but they did do another 3 x rays through the night & this morning to which they said it was coming out on its own as they could see it moving down, b4 this he did say that there was a 78% chance it would come out on it's own otherwise she would have to have an op which terrified her, bless her.

It has not come out yet though but i am sure she will know when it does, can you feel it? does it hurt?

I was so distressed to see my mums screaming in agony, she got that bad she said she could not go on any longer & wanted to die

First she had gas & air which knocked her out a bit, then they put a thing up her bum which was suppost to be good for the pain but did not work & she was crying, then i complained & said that she was in agony & needed something more to which they gave her morphine, that lasted about 2 hrs & then i had to beg them to top it up because the pain came back, she was not even aware we were there.

I am just so so glad she phoned me for help because god knows what would have happened.

I had this when I was 6 months pg with dd, it is v painful and scary, I thought I was in labour and going to lose my dd, ditto making sure she drinks plenty. It knocked me for 6 I was tired for ages, possibly being pg ant the same time didn't help that! She should take some time off work especially as she is a carer that in itself is a togh job (take my hat off to her for being a carer, my grandad was looked after by carers they are amazing people) What did the hospital say regarding going to work?? Surely they would have signed her off? I havent had it again since then but I am more susceptible (sp?!) to UTIs now so always make sure I drink plenty! Not sure the pain is worse than childbirth but it is certainly agony.

You dont need to feel bad, it wasn't your doing, I can understand how you would feel that way though. My grandfather passed away in January and I couldn't bear to leave my nan living alone so I moved her in with me and my 2 babies!!

Hope your mum takes it easy and feels better soon, but I wouldn't advise going back to work

Scoobydooooo · 10/09/2006 16:02

Thanks for all the advice i have just looked it up on NHS direct & there is all different types of kidney stones & also all different places they can form & for all different reasons, it also says about the pain factor it can be mild or sometimes people dont even know they have got them but sometimes its intense pain & people get admitted to hospital. It says they can be sharp so when passing through can scratch which makes you have blood in your urine (my mum had this)

To be honest i was quite shocked she was even allowed out, she has my sister living with her & my brother so she has lots of help at home, well as much help as you can expect from a 22 yr old boy but my sis helps out.

I am going to phone her now & see if she is ok.

I had a/some teeny kidney stones a while ago and I can honestly say...without a shadow of a doubt it was the worst pain I have ever experineced.

Hand on my heart it makes labour feel like a breeze.

In fact it was when I said to DH "Jesus Christ...I'd rather do labour than this any day" that he realised I wasn't talking shit.

God it was AWFUL!!

I know mine were only tiny because I managed to flush them through by drinking lots of water. the symptons I found on the WWW were excatly what I had. Gp sent me for an xray but there was no sign of them.
Whne I read what caused them it was almost my entire diet.....I was horrified!

Honestly....it really was the worst pain ever, I can't imagine what it must feel like to have big kidney stones. I think it would kill me.

I hope she's feeling better soon.

dh had this when ds was a baby. Went to A and E in middle of the night he was in so much pain. They gave him pethidine which he says was great stuff but doesn't recall much else. Took xrays, urine test etc before discharging him a day or two later with painkillers and then did more tests a week or so later to see if it had broken up or moved. She needs to drink loads of water to try to break the stone up in which case it should pass relatively painlessly, as in dh's case. Otherwise they can intervene to break them up, using a laser or catheter I think.

Hope she feels better soon. dh has had no recurrence btw .

Scoobydooooo · 10/09/2006 17:31

Thanks so much for sharing you experience even know i feel sorry for you all.

I have spoken to mum & she is resting & drinking water, water & more water, she says she has no appetite or energy.

She has had no more pain so far but she does have some very strong pain killers.

I lied to her & told her the recommened time of work was 1 week because i think she needs to rest she works blimmin hard anyway for her age, her answer was is it oooh, the doctor never advised about work.

To be honest the whole hospital experience was awful & has made us realise we want to get private health care insurance it is so worth the money after seeing the discusting hole A&E was last night it was gross.

OP posts:
LIZS · 10/09/2006 17:38

but you just don't get private A and E 's. dh had medical insurance and we would have used it longer term but wasn't appropriate at the time. He spent one lovely "restful" night on a GenitoUrinary ward with old men and their prostates !

onlyjoking9329 · 10/09/2006 17:52

i had kidney stones for the first time whilst PG with twins, it was a nightmare and i spent a couple of weeks in hospital i was on the pethidine, ended up with emergency section at 34 weeks
i have had stones twice more, last time i was scanned they saw two stones one was active and did come out, the other one was not causing any problem(said the doc) so they left it, dunno if it will go for a wander anytime soon .
make sure your mum drinks plenty of water.

harrisey · 10/09/2006 21:39

I've suffered from repeated attacks of kidney stones, which were triggered by pregnancy.
Kidney stones are extremely painful but not dangerous unless they get stuck. You can never tell if you will have any more. And the little ones are the most painful as they are very very sharp and cut yo inside, also your ureter has to work harder to squeeze them through that it would with a big one and that is what causes the pain.
Your Mum or anyne else with a stone shoudl try to catch it when it pees out cos there are lots of different types and the treatments are very different. And drink LOADS of water - I drink 10 pints a day to try and prevent it recurring.
Your Mum probably had a Voltarol suppository (the thing up her Bum that didnt work). She should remember that and tell them if she ever has it again cos it is the first line treatment but only works for about 70% of people. If she needed morphine she will probably need it again if it ever recurs.
Hope this helps, I am a bit of an expert on them having had repeated attacks over 5 years and every investigation and treatment known!

harrisey · 10/09/2006 21:40

It doesnt apply to scooby's Mum, but they are a recognised pregnancy complication - about 1 in 2000 pregnancies will have them.
