I want to gouge my mouth out

So just over a month ago I had a lower impacted wisdom tooth removed. All good. Healed well. Back to normal within a week or so.

Last week I had the second one out. Same deal, impacted but partially erupted. Extraction was slightly quicker and easier.

Started healing well, but fast forward 4 or 5 days and the pain got worse. Dentist (who, handily, is my DP) confirmed dry socket and packed it.

Two days later it starts hurting more so I get antibiotics. However, in his intervening time I was rinsing with VERY HOT salt water and putting clove oil on the gums. One or both of these things seems to have burnt all the skin on the roof of my mouth, under my tongue and the gums on the infected side. It's raw and blistering and the pain is far worse than the actual dental pain (although that hurts too). I can't really eat and all I want to do is drink ice cold water.

DP is away for the weekend and I don't want to worry him (or indeed for him to know that I've been so bloody stupid!) so is there anything I can do for the burns to ease the pain and accelerate healing?

Also, how long will it take for my infected dry socket to heal and will the burn delay or affect this? My mouth smells like a mortuary.

I wasn't told to put clove oil on it, by the way. That was just as a result of googling. And I was told to rinse with warm salt water, but also read online that it should be 'as hot as you can stand' so went for boiling water with a splash of cold added. Which is obviously wrong!

Clove oil will burn the soft tissues in your mouth stick to hot salt water don't rinse vigorously just hold it in the area for a minute then spit out. Take painkillers. Sounds like you have chemical/thermal burn so only use water as hot as you can stand.

I am not a medical person, but would think it might help if you took some paracetamol and sucked on some ice chips?

Gosh you poor thing. That sounds horrendous. I would be contacting your dh for advice. How far away is he?!

MackerelOfFact · 04/07/2014 19:55

I'm on all manner of painkillers already for the infected dry socket but it's not touching the mouth burn. Ice is helping a bit but only for as long as it's in my mouth.

Two things that helped when I had chemo sore mouth - soluble disprin - two in half a glass of water and use as a mouth wash - give it a good swill round - don't swallow it. Do it several times a day.

Also - cold water with some slices of cucumber in it is soothing for a sore mouth.

Hope you feel better soon - sounds horrid Sad

Difflam is good for oral pain relief but maybe check with dentist forst if ok to use ?

I am amazed how you didn't throw up with the clove oil, I tried it when I had a gum abscess thingy I thought it was the most vile stuff ever, and it didn't work

I had 6 teeth out a month ago including 3 wisdom teeth, it was horrid and I'm still not back to normal, worried I may need more surgery. My mouth was pretty rancid for the first week and I barely ate ( few mouth falls of soup each day ). You have my sympathy it does get better but can take a few weeks.

MackerelOfFact · 06/07/2014 12:40

Thanks all - KurriKurri I feel for you having had to deal with this on top of freaking cancer, at least this is the only thing I have I worry about!

The clove oil tasted rank but my mouth tasted far far worse, so it was quite a relief really.

Anyway I've come to the conclusion that my mouth and tongue sores and burns are a reaction to the antibiotics (metronidazole) as I've started getting sores inside my eyelids and a rash on my hands. DP has agreed I should stop taking them and see what happens.

The actual socket infection seems to be a lot better now, it's just this burning and peeling skin in my mouth that's getting me!

Check with 111 or someone but might an antihistamine help if it might be a reaction/

gingeroots · 06/07/2014 13:35

Agree - get some anti histamine down you .Can't do any harm .
