My new shiny nickname says it all: had two upper molars removed and petrified

I've had a diagnosis of periodontitis a while now. I've had the lovely abrasion, which helped on my pre molars and front teeth, which weren't too bad, but due to deep pockets and repeated infections in the upper jaw, the specialist periodontist recommended extraction of upper 6 and 7 (the other three quadrants are still under control, for now, I'm told, despite pockets as deep as 11). I had major gum recession there already (almost whole tooth exposed). But after a relatively uneventful extraction yesterday I've got this massive lifting of the gum line, like the upper arch of a wheel. Petrifying! Is there any prospect of improvement? Please someone expert come and reassure me.

I'm not even 50 and feel like an old hag!

OP - has your perio talked to you about gum grafting or bone grafts?

You might want to re-post this on chat as General Health doesn't get so much traffic.

Oh thanks for responding cateblanket yes, she has. She spoke about my needing a sinus lift, which I believe is not as awful as it sounds, but entails extensive work (and cost) and I'm not sure if I'm a good candidate till I'm seen.

Thing is that I keep on thinking of the worst case scenario of the disease spreading through my mouth. It's so ridiculous. I had breast cancer two years ago and yet this has almost devastated me as much. (Or I may have buried the full horror of the surgery I had then.). Anyway, last night I was in floods imagining how grotesque I look, even though in my more rational moments I realise that it isn't that obvious to anyone looking at me.

Moan over.

I don't think you sound ridiculous at all. Teeth are very important to our overall health and wellbeing and appearance. However, you always have options and my dentist tells me a sinus lift isn't a big deal (not that he's ever had one Grin). Start saving for grafts and - worse case scenario - implants. And you do not look grotesque, you've been through a lot and perhaps could benefit from some medication for anxiety (assuming you're not already taking some) to help you regain some equilibrium.

Best of luck.

Thanks so much for your kind words. Perhaps I do need something a bit stronger than tea and tiramisu to lift my anxiety.
