Ds has very bad nappy rash. I have been using sudocrem and/or drapolene but it's no better, it is now bleeding and there are big patches where it looks like the skin has come off.
I'm not sure what else to try. Any ideas ????

Sudocreme will give this effect as nappy rash is in effect nappy burn the skin does come off.
I use chamomile tea as U used it once with my daughter and it had a near miraculous effect on her red bum.
You make it up as normal tea and cool it to wash their bottoms with instead of wipes (which aggravate it in most cases)
It really works, its cheap and easy to get hold off

Metanium is good but did not cure my DS's same symptoms. I was told to buy fullers earth (dead cheap from chemist) and it was brilliant!!

bobsmum · 29/03/2004 20:24

Stop using baby wipes for a while and just use cotton wool and water. Also leave the nappy off for as long as possible. I remember someone saying that egg white is good too - will do a search...

bobsmum · 29/03/2004 20:26

Doormat posted this last August:

"If the nappy area is really sore
Get an egg white, give it a little whisk and place on nappy area.I dont know how the chemical reaction works but it does."

metanium every time

not sure about effectiveness for very severe nappy rash, but kamillosan was the only thing that worked on our ds's medium rash. also i've heard that breast milk works wonders (! ) and i would agree that you should stick to water not wipes and leave him out of nappy as long as poss each day. if you do use water, make sure you really dry him thoroughly, kitchen roll is good for this (just press down with it rather than rub)...hope some of this helps, it is really horrible when your little one has a sore bottom...

Boots Alternative Nappy Rash relief is brilliant - from larger boots

TW · 29/03/2004 21:15

Morhulin. Contains cod liver oil and stinks like hell. very thick and oily but absolutely brilliant. Should get it behind the counter at boots.

CountessDracula · 29/03/2004 22:11

Metanium is fantastic

nutcracker · 29/03/2004 22:51

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I will use cotton wool and water and try to leave him nappyless tommorow as often as poss (say a prayer for the carpet).
I will also try and get some different cream.

If you're using cloth nappies, or are prepared to do so while the rash is bad, half a cup of white vinegar added to the final rinse will help shift it -- something to do whith changing the ph to make it unfriendly for the bacteria that cause the rash.

DS2 had severe 'nappy rash' like this and it turned out to be thrush (which is why canesten works, Twiglett!) I only found this out because my kids NEVER got nappy rash - they inherited extra tough skin from DH, so I took DS to GP. If its bleeding I would go and see your GP/HV, because you will need an antifungal cream to clear it up, and they do ones specifically for this. It took about 1.5/2 days to clear DS's up.

Good Luck!

DS had really bad nappy rash problems and a friend with a son recommended Morhhulin, its really really effective for boys and we could never have managed without it.

If he has bad teething too then the only effective one for him was woodwards teething gel!!!

I was advised by paediatrician not to use water on very bad rash, but oil and cotton wool. Definitely avoid wipes, use oil & cotton wool to clean ( was advised almond oil, which is the best, but pricey, we just used olive oil & later baby oil).

Also during the day to use a fatty cream, and at night a medicated one like sudocremed. And like the others have said, as much nappy free tim as you can manage. And change a pooey nappy immediately, and other wise every 3 hour max. Not as daunting as it sounds and it had an almost immediate effect on ds's bum.

SoupDragon · 31/03/2004 09:34

DS1 had fungal nappy rash a couple of times and yes, Canestan cream cleared it up very quickly. It's worth checking it out.

weleda (health food shop or internet) do a really good nappy cream and baby calendular oil - no chemicals and organic. bare his bot as often as possible.

stace · 31/03/2004 15:36

have to just say that i was warned against using almond oil in case it induced a nut allergy. I listened for about a month or so and then decided that it was ridiculous and started using it again. Please to say no adverse reaction but thought i would pass the info on for those that want to LOL and those that want to justify !!!!

josiejump · 31/03/2004 22:43

When dd's nappy rash got really bad, I used Nelsons hypercal cream ( Hypericum and calendula), and since she was screaming when I tried to wipe her, I put the hairdrier on a cool setting and blowdried her bum! Sounds weird, but it worked- cleared in a few days.

lydialemon · 01/04/2004 16:41

nutty, how's DS - did anything work yet?

nutcracker · 01/04/2004 17:02

It's nearly better thanks LL.
I started using the water and cotton wool and kept his nappy off for a bit in between changes and it's slowly improving. I used some canestan in the end too, which helped alot.
