GP appt after smear test

BaronVonShush · 01/07/2014 18:17

I haven't been on mn for a while but I need you now!

I had a smear test last week and was told I would get a letter about the results after about 2 weeks.

Instead, less than a week later I get a phone call from the receptionist at the GP surgery saying I have to have an appointment with the dr tomorrow. She said it was about the results but couldn't tell me anymore. She was very kind and asked after my 7 month old, which has got me suspicious.

Has anyone had such a quick recall after a smear?

Basically, please tell me it will be alright Smile Sad

Gosh yes I have!! Turned out I needed another smear because they didn't get enough the first time.

Try not to worry x

BaronVonShush · 01/07/2014 18:22

Why can they not tell you that over the phone?? They did that about 10 years ago, in fact they sent me a letter!

Gah. Fingers crossed I just need another one then...

Thanks for replying Smile

Bumping for you. I work at a drs surgery not sure why they'd call you in but good it's so quick and you won't be waiting ages Thanks

VanGogh · 01/07/2014 20:09

Bump.

Chances are it's a big fat lot of nothing. Try to relax. ((((Hugs))))

BettyBolognese · 01/07/2014 20:11

They may want to do another test. Try not to worry (I know easier said than done).

CPtart · 01/07/2014 20:12

You can't have another smear for three months to allow the cervical cells to re-generate (practice nurse) so not sure why they would call you in just to tell you that. The screening service usually send a letter with the results, even when referral to colposcopy is necessary, so agree it does seem a bit odd. Did the nurse do any swabs at the time?
Is it it regarding the results of those??
Try not to worry.

BaronVonShush · 01/07/2014 21:40

spotty thanks for bumping.
CP, the nurse didnt do a swab but I havent been tested for HPV as the last smear I had was 6 years ago.
I am trying not to think about it, or at least trying to be an adult rather than a big baby about it.

Gah.

Good luck with your appointment tomorrow.
Maybe it's related to undissolved stitches or something after having your baby.
Even if it is to request a repeat smear bear in mind that it is better that they double check if they aren't sure they got a good swab etc.

BaronVonShush · 02/07/2014 06:34

Appointment is at 9.30am. raspberry I am hoping it is baby related.

Only 3 hours and a school run to go...

Good luck x

Well, its not what I wanted to hear. They found invasive or glandular neoplasia, which could mean cancer.

I have a biopsy next week and then the treatment could either be a cone biopsy or a hysterectomy. I think. Dr said it definitely will need to be treated whatever it is.

She told me not to google. Hah! Tell that to DH aka Dr Google.

I cant get my head round it. As far as I can make out it could be cancer now or will develop into cancer at a later date. Either way somethings gotta come out.

Ugh. Not sure what to do now. Maybe I will go and get the washing in.

Sorry Baron, hope you're doing ok. If you decide you want any more information on it the website if the British Society of Colposcopy has got a really useful FAQs section. It's bsccp.org.uk.

BaronVonShush · 02/07/2014 10:37

Thanks Betty.

How do people wait for tests without losing their marbles first??

Pannalash · 02/07/2014 11:35

Hi Baron, please try not to panic - I could have written your post 6 years ago (even down to having) a 7 month old.
I had low grade CGIN - from my understanding glandular cells are higher up the cervix.
My advice to you would be to contact the colposcopy department at the local hospital, they really are the experts in that field - in my experience they were amazing and will give you incredible advice and no doubt reassurance.
My treatment involved a Lletz procedure and then a number of 6 monthly smears, then yearly.

Very best wishes

ToAvoidConversation · 02/07/2014 11:40

Please don't panic. Colposcopies are really not much more invasive than a smear test and I didn't feel my biopsies being taken either.

I really don't want to give you false hopes but I was called in and seen quickly as my results looked pretty dire but it turned out I had very little to worry about (this happens to 1/1000 apparently). No treatment needed and was just monitored for few years.

BaronVonShush · 02/07/2014 11:58

Thank you so much for posting, it really is good to hear.

The gp said that is was the highest grade abnormality they could find and just mentioned cone biopsy or hysterectomy. She had spoken to hospital I think. She has said that I can ring the surgery if I want to talk to her and she will ring back or make a same day appointment.

I am trying not to worry, I feel weird, like I dont know what to do with myself, emotionslly or physically. Normal crap I suppose!

Dh has come to work from home, which is nice.

I'm sorry OP. But whatever it turns out to be at least they know about it now and can start doing something about it. (Very unmumsnetty hugs)

rabbitstew · 02/07/2014 13:53

What horrible news to get! Looking on the brighter side, you are lucky the smear test picked this up, as smears are really designed to pick up the changes lower down on the external surface of the cervix and I don't think people tend to get recalls if no glandular cells are picked up at the smear (ie it's easy to miss).

Keeping my fingers crossed for you that subsequent tests show it is not invasive cancer. I know how frightening it is - I just had a "possible" glandular changes on a smear test (and a large cone taken out of my cervix just in case, which turned out to have been unnecessary!).

Bouttimeforwine · 02/07/2014 15:05

Thinking of you. Flowers

Treatment is so good for this sort of thing nowadays, that even if it is bad news, the outlook is good.

SpottyTeacakes · 02/07/2014 15:55

Sorry to hear this op. It sounds like you have a lovely dr though. Glad your dh has come home Thanks

RaspberryRuffle · 02/07/2014 23:15

Sorry it wasn't the news you wanted to hear OP.
Hoping you don't have too long to wait for biopsies and results. When it has sunk in a little maybe you can speak to the doctor about possible treatments etc. Sending positive thoughts.

EssexMummy123 · 02/07/2014 23:53

I've had cone biopsy and loop diathermy for cin2 and the worst thing was the local anaesthetic - it is scary stuff but hopefully seeing a gynae consultant will reassure you, the finding it and treating it is the important thing.

VanGogh · 03/07/2014 09:07

Sending you love and strength x
