infected mollescum, leave or squeeze?

Hi

DD has had the evil mollescum for 18 months now. This is one on her arm, it was much bigger but got.scratched and burst and this is what it looks like now.

I don't know if I should just leave well alone? I don't want to squeeze it as it has already been scratched and squeezed. I have been putting fucidin on.but not.sure if that's the best thing or o should just use an antiseptic Cream, and if I should cover with a plaster or not?

Thanks in advance
TOOIK

leave well alone. if you squeeze it, you risk further spread of the virus, as well as creating a secondary skin infection - there is also the risk of scarring.

it's probably left best open to the air - but if your child is school age, it should be covered by clothing (e.g long sleeved shirt) to try and prevent spread to other kids.

Thanks, it has already been squeezed once as after it was scratched the top came off the mollescum so I had to get the inside out so it might very that some of that's left or its just gone foosty. She's only 2. I have a plaster on today but will take that off and let it dry out. Hopefully she won't scratch it again. She has some horrible purple scars from.other ones, including one on.her face :(

Should I see how it heals before I put an antiseptic or fucidin on?

fucidin will only help if it's become infected with a secondary bacterial infection. molluscum itself is a virus.

i would generally try and leave the lesions open to the air, unless you really don't think your daughter will be able to avoid scratching them - tough, i know, even for adults!

tooknackeredtoosleep · 01/07/2014 14:11

I would leave it open to the air.

Molloscum is horrid isnt it. My son had it all over his legs and chest for what seemed like forever. After about 18 months the spots began to crust over and then all of a sudden they were gone. I wonder if thats whats happening to your DD? Fingers crossed!

Thank you all!

I know mollescum is harmless but has been part of my life now for over 3 years and am fed up! DS had over 100 of them and they went eventually went after 18months and left no scars except tiny pit marks. But despite best efforts to avoid it he passed it on his sister at 6 months old. She's now 2 and I am still trying to get rid of it.

Unfortunately she has scratched a few of them and thy have all left purple scars which are very obvious but I m hoping will fade?....

This one on her inner arm though is especially feisty. When she scratched it the top came off so I had to squeeze out the inside which was minging. Maybe the yellow bit is still some of.the.virus am not sure.

She has three spots left!!

I will take the plaster off and tell the nursery to make sure her sleeves aren't rolled up.

Thanks again.x

It actually got much worse during the day, more red with a bigger head. Gp said needs anti biotics so prescribed flucloxacillan which tastes so vile she won't entertain taking it at all and spits it out :(

It has also started weeping so have put a plaster on it. Will need to see how she gets on with the antibiotics. Maybe just using the fucidin cream would work just as Well?

There isn't any improvement to the spot. DD has been on anti biotics for three full days now? should it be getting better? It is still red and pus has a white head. Can't leave it open as it is weeping slightly.

Should the drugs kick in soon? It's only a five day course

This is it now after course of anti biotics?

I'd go to the GP tmrw for more antibiotics.

My DD had an infected molluscum which didn't respond to antibiotics, resulted in infected tissue and she had to have an operation, and woud management for 3 weeks. Don't worry it looked very different to your DDs - but I don't mess around with infections now (and we have had 6 in 6 months).

Theonlyoneiknow · 06/07/2014 10:04

Have got a nurse appt at 840am so hopefully she can prescribe or get Gp to do it.

Not sure if I should now be leaving it open to the air, or keep covered up. Has been weeping so kept covered up but think it needs air now. If it crusts up does the white bit just scab and drop off? Wasn't sure what happens to.the pus if it doesn't drain out

My dd had a crop of molluscum on her forehead and face last year - I read somewhere that Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour Cream could help stink probably kills the virus

We tried it and it did work - not sure I'd use it on a big infected one but you could try it on the others they have. Let me know if it works, as I'd always wondered if it was coincidence or not.

Theonlyoneiknow · 08/07/2014 10:23

Just thought I would report back. The pus head scabbed over and was knocked off in her sleep. I took her to the nurse on Monday by which time the scab was a bloody colour. She was happy with how it's recovering now and said to just leave it to air as much as possible. She also gave her some cream for her horribly nasty thrush on her bits (have never seen anything like it, poor thing!).

Still have two more mollescum, hopefully they will go without as much drama! It's only been 18+ months they have been hanging around!

Thanks for all the posts.
