Using someone else's antibiotics....

Dd had an outer ear infection 10 days ago and was prescribed 7 days of antibiotics. It's cleared up fine.

I woke up in the night with earache and know this is the same thing. I swim a lot and am prone to swimmers ear, have had it once a year or so for a while and knew a couple of days ago that I had water in my ear iyswim. It's exactly the same and dd has lots of drops left. Dosage is the same, can't get an appointment to see a doc before mid week, would really like get started on treatment as we fly in 10 days. Can I use her ear drops?

Everyone will tell you that you shouldn't use someone else's medication, but in this situation I would be tempted to do just that.

I can think of many situations where using someone else's meds would be a thoroughly bad idea, but this is not one of them.

Call your doctor and get a telephone consultation. You will not be able to fly with an ear infection but the wrong abs will do no good whatsoever and you wont have enough for a full course so likely to have reinfection.

Thanks all. We have buckets of the stuff (in the USA so insurance pays .... Plus dds gp gave her a double dose in case it spread to the other ear).

My gp isn't at the same practice as dds and doesn't do phone consultations ... I think I can email her though. You either wait or go to a pharmacy clinic for this type of thing.

I would never ever use anyone else's medicine normally but think I will continue and give it 48 hours to see an improvement.

Sounds like a plan. Hope it sorts itself x

Bugger, ear is worse and pretty painful, sitting in waiting room to see a doctor!
