Bits and pieces are sore!

I've had a problem on and off for a few months now. my vulva gets very sore for no apparent reason, making sex unbearable. It seems to come and go. I use canestan cream which helps. Today I've got a long painful crack in the skin of the vulva that stings when I need the loo,I've put some cream on and hopefully it will get better. Any ideas anyone why this is happening?

I had similar when I was pregnant with DS. It was awful and so painful I often cried! I mentioned it at my next antenatal appointment and they sent me to the GUM clinic to get checked out. I knew it wasn't an STI as I had total faith my partner was faithful to me and I was to him but agreed to get checked out. To cut to the chase I was diagnosed with eczema down there which would flare up at certain points in the month like when I was ovulating (when I wasn't pregnant) or just before AF was due. It got worse and worse but thankfully the steroid cream prescribed soon started to settle it down. I'm just praying I won't get it again this time!

It doesn't actually look like traditional eczema when you have it down there but it got so sore that it sometimes bleed and nearly always weeped :(

I hope you get it sorted soon but may be worth a visit to either your GP or a walk in GUM/sexual health clinic.

Might be lichen sclerosus (sp)

See your GP

I had trouble when I had a mirena in, kind of perpetual low grade thrush that would flare up then go away again. Stopped when I got it out.

I think the GP is a plan but if you have a mirena that's worth considering as well.

Blueuggboots · 29/06/2014 22:09

I was allergic to latex condoms but also took good bacteria supplements (sorry, can't remember the name of them but got them from natures best) incase it was thrush. Hasn't happened for a whole now.

3littlefrogs · 29/06/2014 22:18

How old are you?

3littlefrogs · 03/07/2014 07:04

My question re age was because I am wondering if you have perimenopausal oestrogen deficiency vaginitis BTW, (not meaning to be rude). This can start late thirties/early 40s and can be cured with local oestrogen application.

I have had similar symptoms diagnosed as persistent thrush for years. I have a merina coil and take a canesten tablet weekly to keep it at bay. But still sore sometimes. Get to the doctor. I know it's not nice but you'll be pleased you did! Good luck

SevenZarkSeven · 04/07/2014 23:00

flowerpower I don't know if you saw my post but my persistent thrush started when my mirena went in and stopped when it came out. Are you very attached to your mirena or due a change? It might be worth having a spell without if you can fit that in with your lifestyle to see if it is linked. I found it awful.

Thinking about it, I have a friend who had persistent thrush for ages I am seeing her over the weekend I will ask if she had/has a mirena coinciding with that.

SevenZarkSeven · 04/07/2014 23:04

Just had a quick google:

"Mirena and Yeast Infection
One of the most common side effects of the Mirena coil is yeast infections, which differs from bacterial vaginosis. Yeast infections are very unpleasant and uncomfortable. There is a relatively effective treatment for Candida yeast infection caused by Mirena coil side effects that is called immunotherapy. The woman is not to eat any foods that contain yeast and sugars and is given an allergenic substance by drops or injection to enhance the immune capabilities of her body.

Yeast infections are very hard to get rid of once they're established and many women choose to have the Mirena removed in order to rid them entirely of the infection."

I wasn't imagining a connection then! Bloody hell, I don't remember that being on the bit of paper in the packet!

Thanks for all your replies. I'm 40. I've been to the docs and she thinks it could be thrush, she's taken a swab to send of. In the meantime she has prescribed caneston pessary and cream,I'll give it a go and she if it helps. I'll keep you posted!

Pleased you went to the drs. Hopefully it'll get sorted now.

flowerpowergirl · 06/07/2014 22:37

Thanks Seven that's really interesting. I knew there was a link but you found out more than I did! I don't fancy giving up bread (!) but have wondered if i should have a break from the coil. Trouble is it was fitted in an attempt to control endometriosis and has worked brilliantly. Pain or thrush? Tough choice! Tempted to say roll on menopause!

Nottinghill - glad you got to the docs. Hope the canesten works.
