Adored Grandad about to have heart bypass surgery

My lovely father-in-law is due to have heart bypass surgery in a couple of weeks time. The whole family adores him utterly and obviously we're pretty scared as it's a serious operation. My question is- what, if anything, should I be telling my 3 year olds about all this? They absolutely worship their "Daddo" and love to roughouse with him, talk with him, follow him round, stomp about pretending to be him, etc. How do I get them to realise that he's going to be feeling a bit frail for this sort of activity? And that their Nana, Daddy and Aunty may well be preoccupied and worried too? I don't want to scare them but they're used to seeing their grandparents at least once a week- and being spoiled rotten during that time!- so they're definitely going to notice that something is up if I just keep them away from the situation and tell them nothing.

Well, it seems like all your thoughts and good wishes are working! My FIL is stable in the high dependency ward and, though it's obviously early days, it looks like everything went pretty well. Will update you in a few days...

Thanks Bloss. I appreciate your prayers hugely and I swear that old atheist blushed with pleasure when I told him that I had my friends on Mumsnet and in RL praying for him!

I was just wondering when he would be having his op, great news that all is going well for you all. Hope it continues thus!

Tinker · 04/04/2002 22:25

Glad to hear it's all going well

ScummyMummy · 08/04/2002 20:43

Well, "Daddo" came home today less than a week after the op. Everyone's delighted at his progress- he's in a bit of pain and is pale and slightly grumpy( for devoted Nana!) but really seems on the road to recovery already. Thank you all so much once again for your good wishes, advice and stories.

Isnt it amazing how quickly they recover from such a major op. Im so pleased everything is going ok, the grand kids will ensure a quick recoup.

Scummymummy, brilliant news, just thought I'd let you know, my father who I mentioned had a by pass some time ago, was signed off by his consultant last Friday with a clean bill of health. He and mum have now gone out and booked a walking holiday in Yorkshire!
Just thought this might help and reassure you that they seem to get much fitter than they were before.
Take care and hope the rest of the recovery goes as well as this first week.

Hi Scummer, just caught up with this one again. Great to hear he's doing so well - really pleased for you all...
