Grommets + adenoids out + tonsils out - advice on the op? Any experiences?

DD (just 4) has not been able to hear for a year. I want her to have this op and can't wait for her to hear and sleep normally (bad sleep apnoea when she has a cold and all winter.)

Now the op is booked in for July 16 and I am suddenly terrified for her .

Anyone's DC been through this recently? Any experiences - what happened, how long it took, recovery and how I can help?

Thanks.

My dc had tonsils and adenoids out about 10 months ago. He suffered terribly with sleep apnea and tonsillitis and it was the best thing we did.
I'm not going to lie post op was hard, he was in a lot of pain and sleep was terrible. He was still 2yrs old though so it was very hard for him to tell us anything.
I'm sure they'll explain it to you at the hospital but it's very important to keep up the pain relief at the times your meant too IYSWIM.
The op went fine and although I was a bit teary when he went under it was over in a flash and back with me.
my dc had grommets a few months later so went through it all again but was a whole lot easier that time and he was up and about within minutes of coming round.
Seen as your dc is a little older than mine I'm sure he will be able to tell you when it hurts etc.. just go with it and you won't regret it he will be a new little boy after a couple of weeks.
Good luck to you and your dc, you will be fine.

Sorry said dc throughout and realised it is your dd.
also the op takes about 40 mins from when they go under to waking up.

DS2 had this done when he was five. Op went well but work up screaming the ward down bless him.
His hearing is still poor. One gromit fell out quickly. He is constantly bunged up and has a horrific nasal drip. I think it would have been a lot worse if he hadn't have had it done though - especially from a tonsils point of view.

and hoping there are some happier experiences along soon.

stressfree I really hope your DS2 hearing improves. It's so hard for them. Consultant had a good analogy - said it was like trying to drive with the brakes on.

charlmills thank you so much, I will be prepared for her to be in pain. Poor little thing. God I hope doing right thing.

I had my addenoids and tonsils out many, many years ago.
All I remember is throwing up afterwards, eating lots of icecream, and much less madicine, as I wasn't getting as many ear infections.

My DS had his adenoids out last year and his third set of grommets inserted at the same time. The first two sets of grommets never really had much impact because his adenoids were huge. Anyway, op was fine, quick and painless, although I understand that tonsil removal is more painful post -op.

The difference to his sleep, speech and behaviour have been dramatic and I'm so glad that we did the procedure. We also keep him off dairy products because that makes him really mucousy and affects his hearing. I think that the short term effects of the op i.e. the pain, are far outweighed by the benefits to hearing, learning and general well being. I hope it goes well for your dd. You are doing the right thing Thanks

Thank you east

I will keep thinking - watch, she will blossom / take off afterwards.

Her ears are really good at the moment (we've been in Africa for a month) but Nov to June she was missing 80% of speech.

EIGHTY %.

And she's starting school in Sept. Has to be done.

DS had this op just before his 3rd birthday - he's 11 now and we brought a different child home from the hospital. His breathing at night was so much better and his hearing improved straight away. The grommets fell out about 10 months later and the holes healed perfectly. The only problem we had was getting him to wear ear plugs in the water when on holiday but that was only cos he's a stubborn little bugger!

Just stock up on calpol and nurofen for the 1st few nights and he'll be fine.
