Is it normal the the consultant will refuse to allow the GP to talk to the patient about their results?

As that is what my dad has been told

I think in your dads case, it would be appropriate as its likely a multi disciplinary team are discussing the results and what treatment path would be appropriate, and it needs those experts to talk to your dad about it, not the GP

He is not happy

I think he feels out of control & arguing about this will help - I can't see it helping but I do think we need some emotional support

I don't think it would be appropriate for a GP to be interpreting and giving results especially if it is something complex. I do appreciate how hard that must be though. Can you phone the consultant's secretary?

KatyMac · 23/06/2014 21:09

She says that the next appointment won't be made until after tomorrow - but tbh I think they are intentionally wasting time

He needs someone to talk to now

A helpline won't work as he doesn't have a voice and a chat room won't work because as a writer, he will constantly edit his posts until they are 'perfect' (I know someone like that Hmm - never get even close but I edit extensively)

Do you know if they have the results?

KatyMac · 23/06/2014 21:40

Yep Broncoscopy on Thursday, at GP's on Friday; at this stage he isn't that worried about the Cancer, he just wants his voice back which might happen if they do radio/chemo or they might do an injection if that doesn't work

Well, he wants the injection straight off as without his voice he is useless; but as he found out on Thursday the ENT guy wants to do a second broncoscopy in a few weeks

I just posted this on the wrong thread - oh bugger it must be getting to me

"I know he has unreasonable expectations but if he only has weeks/months to live he does not want to spend them not knowing what is going on

He has a party to plan & wants to have it before he's too ill to enjoy it"

His appointment is at 3 on Thursday 29 days after his Xray

Better off with the Consultant than a GP - GP's no nothing. Jack of all trades, master of nothing !

sanfairyanne · 25/06/2014 22:25

can you get a professional second opinion and get the results under data protection?

KatyMac · 26/06/2014 07:49

We haven't had a diagnosis to get a second opinion for yet

From my dh (a GP) I know that there are many consultants - even in your dad's situation - who prefer the GP to explain the diagnosis/prognosis.

Sometimes the GP is the best person, consultants don't get the same communication training.

Katy - in your situation I'd hope the multi-disciplinary meeting would report back ASAP - you've waited long enough.

(And Fuzz yes, GPs know nothing. Only 5 years of medical school and 5-6 more years to know nothing. My dh works bloody hard, is up to date and diagnoses and manages patients from infants to the elderly. Often mops up the mess a surgeon with no communication skills has left. But nah,he knows nothing.)

Well Tuesday to today is pretty good I suppose

The GP surgery has been amazing - but they have been reprimanded by the hospital for telling dad he had a tumour.....I mean going for a bog standard Chest Xray & being hurried off to have a scan immediately (10 minutes later) isn't at all worrying and wouldn't make anyone concerned, would it?
