i had a rant on here last week as after years of having tonsilitus i finally got told in March that i could have them removed and was put on the waiting list.

last week i felt my throat starting to play up and thought i would phone the hospital just to see how long the list was now and the receptionist told me i should have been in that day to have them out and that she had removed me from the list as i failed to show up.

explained id never received the letter and yesterday after kicking up a fuss that being put to the back of the list and waiting til march wasn't really acceptable i got an app for beginning of jan.

i'll get to my question now.. the woman told me i would need to go into hosp the night before to make sure i had a bed and then also be in the following night after i've had the op. previously i got told it was an in and out in a day jobby.

has anyone else had to stay in before? or has the woman got the info wrong. TIA

Hi Sweetmonkey

How frustrating they never sent you a letter.

I had my tonsils out just over 2 years ago, I was admitted the day I had them removed and I had to stay in over night, I think its so they can keep an eye on you incase of bleeding. I was fine and out the following morning with no problems.

thanks puppy. was it really bad or not? do you really need the 2 weeks off after or does it vary do you think? need to prepare myself lol

It took me approx 10days to recover, the pain was like a severe dose of tonsilitis but I managed to eat toast the day after the op,
one tip for you is at my hospital they gave me co-codermol tablet form as they prefer you to try and eat as normal, I got DH to goto the chemist and get soluble solpherdol(SP?), just so I could eat better. iykwim

I'd like to add that I would have them rmoved again, I was 27 when they were removed and had suffered from enlarged tonsils and tonsillits since very young. Its been great for the last few years not having constant infections.

Looks like DS has inherited my tonsils though

Hi sweetmonkey.

You do always have to stay in afterwards for tonsilectomy. I had mine done privately and still ahd to stay, due to risk of bleeding.

As for the stay beforehand, this is quite common with some hospitals. Some ofthe depts at our hospitals are like this, wanting you in the night before to make sure you're there and your bed doesn't go to someone else. It is a PITA I know, but unfortunately they do often insist on this.

Good luck with the op. The pain in my ears was the most unbearable for me, but as I was bf my 5mo son at the time I couldn't take painkillers. I do get less throat infections now, and not as severe, but they are still fairly regular.

thanks to both of you for your advice. just be glad to get it over with now.
