my ds had his tonsils removed on aug. 31, it's been 6 days since and still needs painkiller. i find it odd too that he slept soundly the first few nights but staring 3 nights ago, he's been waking up in the middle of the night and cried that his throat hurts. is this normal, how long will it take for the pain in his throat to go away??

my daughter (age 4) had her tonsils out in february. it did take a couple of weeks to get back to normal. she still complained about her throat, but i think that is because she just felt crappy and didn't know how to express that, so said her throat was sore. can't be much more help than that, sorry. hope he picks up soon. can you speak to the place where he had it done for a follow up and some advice??

thanks for your reply, anniediv, my son's follow-up app't is 8 weeks after the o/p. did u keep giving painkiller for those few weeks? is it ok to give so much?

I remember doctor saying to keep giving the painkillers for at least 1 week (ds1 was 3 years old and on 3 different painkillers). I think that the effects of the anaesthetic wear off after a few days and this is when they can start to feel poorly. Hope he is better soon.

ds1 was lucky to have 3 different painkillers, the only thing i've got is paracetamol, and it's running out cuz the doctor only gave 1 week of supply!

Remember you can give alternate paracetamol and ibuprofen (from chemist) as follows: (Don't know how old you ds is so check dose).

7am Calpol
9.30am Nurofen
12pm Calpol
2.30pm Nurofen
5pm Calpol
7.30pm Nurofen, then you can give one more calpol if necessary in the night

DS1 also had codeine - not sure if you can get this at chemist? Get your GP to prescribe all of them to save money!

how long did your ds have to be on painkiller? do know if it's ok to keep giving for over 1 week?

I can't remember how long but think more than a week. Ask the pharmacist or your GP to be sure.

thank you very much, strawberry!
