Rung NHs direct they say 4 hrs to call back...
Ems 17 mths is vomiting up everything incl calpol, have tried bathing stripping her temp remains at 39.5 she is so fogged over - looks dozy but alert enough to moan, no spots .
Do I sit tight and will she be ok with high temp, she is not prone to convulsions,
she has been off food and milk all day and most of yesterday which I put down to teething
Do I call out doc now rather than wait or relax she'll be ok?

You're doing all the right things: just keep sponging her down, and watch her closely. If she has a convulsion, or her temperature goes any higher, or if you feel she is worse, then call the doctor.

I think she'll be fine, but trust your instincts xx

gingernut · 26/03/2004 20:17

Will your emergency docs give advice over the phone? If so, I'd ring them.

Keep tepid sponging, I find it does usually bring the temp down after a while.

Offer her sips of water but don't worry too much just yet if she can't keep it down.

HTH and that someone else comes on who can offer some more suggestions. I have to go now.

popsycal · 26/03/2004 20:18

a thing about the sponging down - make sure it is tepid not cool - otherwise it will cause her to shiver which in turn will raise her temp higher

misdee · 26/03/2004 20:22

baby nerofen is better at bringing temp down. do u have some or someone who can go get some? its ok to use with calpol. give her sips of water, a teaspoon at a time. and strip her off, sponge her with tepid water and just cuddle her with a light blanket to make sure she doesnt get too chilled.
if you get really really worried then call the gp out.

popsycal · 26/03/2004 20:24

nurofen and clapol can both be given at the same time if temp is really high

listen to twiglett - she said what i meant...

nutcracker · 26/03/2004 21:19

I think this is what i was told to do when dd had high temp.
Give Calpol, then 2 hours later give nurofen, then 2 hours later give calpol again and so on. Just make sure there are the required hours gap between each dose of the same medicine.

Does that make sense.

NHS direct should be able to explain it to you, as i'm pretty sure it was them that told me. HTH

My ds (23 months) was exactly the same night before last, same high temp and everything. I rang the emergency doc after a horrendous vomiting session and they just advised me to strip him off and turn the heating off and go to the doctors the next day. Turns out he has an ear infection and is now on antibiotics, although getting him to take them is a nightmare!

Hi
She is a bit better today- we took her to after hours doctor last night as she was not keeping down water or calpol- and he said she was bit dehydrated but doing ok, she kept water down thru night but vomited up calpol and nurofen, so we sponged her a lot as temp was high... today she has had milk and slept had milk and slept etc etc, she is pretty wiped out... but not spewing anymore...
must go is milk time again!
thanks for replies

dd2 swtarted being sick very early this morning. have kept up off milk all day and she has had light meals, which has helped her to keep things down. luckily she will drink water so has been drinking plently of fluids. but also has a temp.

kiwisbird · 28/03/2004 20:55

Ems is still throwing up but only once a day, usually just after going to bed, still off food, not drinking much milk but taking lots of water.
Temp has calmed down now.
I don't think I need to be worried about once a day vomiting do I? She is otherwise perky enough, below par and sleeping more but chirpy in herself.
Hope your dd is ok tonight misdee its horrible
xx

hi, when my DD had a nasty tummy bug throwing up for four days! our gp suggested that we wtared down her milk, apparntly milk duirng illness can cause more mucus production making them throw up. We did 60% milk and then added 40% cooled boil water, she did stop throwing up once we started doing this not sure whether bug had run it's course whether watering the milk helped. HTH

kiwisbird · 29/03/2004 12:10

funnily enough we did this last night - dd is still on follow on due to low weight gain and specific calorie needs.
We used half amount of milk except in early mornign feed. She still threw up last night but that was after she had eaten something then had milk on top (she is natural gannet)
Today she is just drinking a bit of milk and then going straight back to bed again, she is knackered.
