very sore arm after having blood sample taken a week ago

Has anyone had this? I had a blood sample taken at my GP last week (like most people I've had oodles of blood samples taken, have donated blood etc, without any problems).
For some reason I've had a terribly sore arm since, with some bruises on it - presumably my vein had continued to bleed under the skin for a bit. My whole arm hurts (particularly when any pressure is applied, and not just the bruised area), it's waking me up at night and is, to be honest, being a complete and utter nuisance.
I've not rung my GP because it sounds so pathetic and like I'm just a complete hypochondriac - dh keep saying I should ring because it might be something bad like a clot, but it's not swollen so I would think not. Anyway, any ideas?

I had something similar when I went for a few blood tests in one week. The person who took your blood quite possibly didn't have a nice taking-blood-with-an-injection bedside manner. If you don't want to ring your GP then you can call NHS direct. They are always lovely

ooh that is so painful - I think it was one of the first posts I ever did on mumsnet - I was convinced I was dying my arm was so painful and had visions of blood clots and the like (esp since I have good flowing blood and normally have no trouble having blood taken!)

Apparently if not enough pressure is applied straight away (after the needle is taken out) or (like I did) you carry something heavy straight away afterwards then it can result in this bruising. If you have some nurofen gel or something similar you could put it on the bruises/sore area. Mine was so painful, I ended up putting an ice pack on it and then took some nurofen. It took a while to clear up!!

Quite right about the amount of time it takes to get better. But mine wasn't as bad as needing to apply an ice pack. That must have been quite nasty

howcome?

geekgrrl · 05/09/2006 15:54

ooh, thank you for reassuring me.
I did lift dd into the carseat afterwards, so that does make sense.
I've taken some paracetamol which has taken the edge off. Really annoying though.

My MW took blood from me & I bruised for 10-14days (when no-one knew I was preg in middle of summer & had to wear long sleeves . I didn't let her do it again - went to see surgery nurse (who is very good at it) after that. Apparently, accoding to the surgery nurse surface veins tend to beed & bruise - but I think it has to with technique too when the bruising is that bad.
