screaming!

My little dd who is 8 weeks old screams the place down whenever she does a poo, which thankfully is usually only once a day! It really seems to cause her pain, and can go on for quite some time... does anyone else have this problem? The doctor said it was caused by wind, but since switching milk brands she isn't suffering from that any longer, yet still the screaming goes on... help!

She probably still associates poo with pain hence the fact she is still screaming, dont have any advice on how to stop it though.

yeS!! ds used to scream his head off just before poo came out (went v quiet and meditative as it was emerging...) he still doesn't like it but doesn't usually cry anymore, and i would say the out and out screaming stopped at around 12 weeks, hang on in there... i don't agree with your doctor, i think that the actually process of pooing may feel really uncomfortable for a baby who never had to do it for 9 months...i doubt she is screaming out of habit, she is obviously uncomfortable, but i really think if she's anything like my ds it will pass

Heathcliffscathy · 27/03/2004 11:29

i used to put him in my lap and hold his hands whilst he was facing me which seemed to help him with the straining

stellarmum · 27/03/2004 19:07

ooh yes she does go all meditative whilst something is actually happening... i just feel so sorry for her! I feel better knowing it's not that unusual, I guess I'll hang on in there in the hope it will improve!

will get better i promise...mine is only five months and i find it hard to remember how distressed he used to get...

My dd did the same until 7 or 8 months. I was exclusively bfing and on the advice of my american paediatrician added a bottle a day of a special american (you can get it in england) stay down formula called Enfamil AR when my dd was 4.5 months. It seemed to make quite a difference, though it didn't eliminate all the screaming. We started solids at 6months and still kept up the bfing and enfamil and things slowly improved. She's 18mo. and now only screams when her brother won't let her have all the toys.

My ds screamed for 16 hours solid intil he was 9 weeks old. It was suggested to me that this might be because of his digestive system. I was told don't worry its just colic. I took him to a cranial osteopath and after 3 treatments she had straightened him out and he never suffers with any problems top or bottom end. I was sceptical to start with but when you get desperate you will try anything. Good luck

Heathcliffscathy · 28/03/2004 18:51

god my memory is just completely rubbish at the moment, stellarmum, my ds was helped extraordinarily by cranial osteopathy, it was for when he went 10 days without a poo, which they say is ok, but obviously wasn't ok for him at all...maybe it could help you like jeeling suggests...the effects on mine was immediate, he did a poo that afternoon!!! and actually since then his digestion has been a whole lot better, i would strongly recommend, and i started off a sceptic too...

stellarmum · 28/03/2004 20:59

someone else recommended cranial osteopathy too, I've never met anyone who's used it before, but i will give it a try as they have given me the number of an osteopath who lives nearby... what exactly do they do? I know they manipulate the skull, but how?
