I am about to have the coil fitted at the beginning of April and just wondered if anyone else has had this done and can tell me if it hurts having it put in etc.

Had one fitted years ago, pre-children. Rather uncomfortable having it fitted and there can be some pain at that point. Later you may get some period-like cramping, but mine went overnight.

MrsGrump · 26/03/2004 17:09

Yes, it hurts. Not wildly, just not nice. They can give you a mild sedative, though, if you ask.

AussieSim · 26/03/2004 17:39

It hurts - more than uncomfortable IME. I was about to tell my Dr to forget it when he said 'That's it'. I had some light bleeding for about a week afterwards. I got it out about a year later (couldn't stand the heavier periods) and am happy to report that it doesn't hurt coming out. Kind of wish I hadn't had one now that I am TTCing and read that they are a risk for infertility from scaring etc. The doctor said I was fine - but then he would he put it in. Are you just getting a normal one or a mirena one - I hear that with Mirena you basically don't get periods at all.

lieman · 26/03/2004 17:47

mine is due to come out in the next couple of weeks. Is it as sore coming out as it was going in?

lydialemon · 26/03/2004 18:11

IME it was just like having an internal - not fun, but OK. When I had it removed I didn't feel anything at all!

i had one and it was unconfortable having itput in but you can take a combo of paracetamol and ibuprofen 1/2 hour before appointment and that helps.

HelloMama · 26/03/2004 18:15

had it taken out after 6 months due to heavy periods and was quite worried but i didn't even feel it coming out, was kinda like having a tampon removed (by someone else!)

i'm a family planning nurse so if you need any more accurate info please ask away...

LIZS · 26/03/2004 18:17

I had a muscle relaxant and it was still pretty uncomfortable. Not painful as such but definitely hurt a bit.

mirena ones (which have a hormone implanted in the frame) are really great and are used widely for gynae problems now, but they can cause irregular periods for a few months after having them fitted wich can be a pain... but then after that, most people don't have periods at all which is a godsend to most women I believe!

HelloMama · 26/03/2004 18:25

having had a coil in the past should not affect your fertility at all, although if you catch an STI such as Chlamydia with a coil insitu it can complicate things a bit. I would recommend anyone TTC to go and have an infection screen as part of their pre-natal care just to make sure there aren't any probs. But coils themselves will not cause fertility probs (unless there is a cock-up during the actual fitting of them)

Ronyag · 26/03/2004 21:56

I had one fitted nearly a year ago & was absolutely dreading the fitting but it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it was going to be .Taking ibuprofen before went definately helped .
But I would say that although I knew about periods getting heavier cramping worse etc. I didn't realise it would be quite as bad as it is & have considered a few times having it removed(I have copper coil fitted not mirena).Bled for quite a few mths. continously after it was put in too.
Would agree with what others have said ,more an uncomfortable ,not nice rather than actually painful!
Hope appt. goes ok .

emsiewill · 26/03/2004 22:18

HelloMama (if you're still around) - or anyone else for that matter - why does the mirena have to be fitted during a period? I was told this by the GP who does this at our surgery - but it was impossible to get an appointment during my period - she only works part time, and there has to be a nurse free at the same time - plus they didn't pass the message to the doctor the first time I rang. It was a real palaver, and I didn't bother the next month. I would like the mirena, but is there any way to have it fitted not during a period?

fairydust · 26/03/2004 22:19

I had one fitted at the beginnning of November last yr and it was the worst thing i could ever had done - i was in agony when it was put in then a month later i did nothing but bleed - bled for about 21days and ended being inemic 9god i can't spell) and taking the bloody thing out myself.

don't mean to put u off i just had a very experience with it.

Furball · 26/03/2004 22:58

I had Mirena fitted about 18 months ago and could count on one hand the periods I've had since then It does hurt/uncomfortable having it 'fitted' but nothing too extreme. I definately didn't have it fitted during my period though.

Ronyag · 27/03/2004 12:07

Hello again,
Yes ,thats right you are meant to have it fitted during period aparently something to do with opening to cervix being slightly more open or something during period so easier for person fitting coil to fit it !,I think.(someone correct me if I'm wrong)Anyways I got no choice in matter so opted for just as period was finishing rather than at start or halfway through!!
Fairydust,I am intrigued that you were able to remove yours yourself,I didn't think this was possible (though obviously is !)as I too have been totally fed up with the flipping thing at times!.

LIZS · 27/03/2004 12:15

emsiewill, although they say that ideally, it can be done at other times. It can certainly be done postnatally before periods have returned for example. I suspect it is to minimise the obvious after effects such as bleeding and cramps and perhaps easier to fit then.

alibubbles · 27/03/2004 16:41

I thought it was to make sure you were n't pregnant?
