Slightly embarrassing & unpleasant - help?

I appear to have contracted athlete's foot. Due to my hygiene routine I now appear to have some mild irritation on my hands, and also the itchiest fanjo ever, accompanied by a foul smell too. Nice.

Basically, I didn't realise I had athletes foot, and have those exfoliating glove thingys in the bath and gave my feet a bloody good scratch scrub. My 'routine' always means the last thing I wash is the fanjo area. Hence the now apparent cross-contamination and spread of infection with the worst smell I've ever had 'down there'.

I clearly need to get something to clear all this up - my question is, would I get to take a swab myself to pass to doc for checking? Or is this something that needs both a visual inspection as well as a swab to ID the type of infection/correct prescription?

The idea of having any kind of examination 'down there' while smelling like this just fills me with horror. I'd hate to put the doc through that too.

Anyone know what I'm likely to face when at docs? I need to brace myself if it's a visual look at my angry red itchy smelling fanjo. Jeez, why did this happen?

Athletes foot is the same yeast/fungus-y thing as thrush.

Get some over the counter canistan (however you spell it) the pill and the cream, and a treatment for the athletes foot go to separate chemists

And wash your hands Blush

Thank you - anything to avoid exposing my nether region.

Athletes foot is not caused by the same "yeast/fungus-y thing" as thrush.

What is going on in your fango won't be related to Athletes foot. Doctors are used to smelly stuff. Go to the GP (or GUM clinic, they are specialists and you can self-refer. And they are not only for sexually-transmitted stuff.).

Catswiththumbs · 12/06/2014 01:13

They are both candida yeast infections.

differentnameforthis · 12/06/2014 01:32

I would try an over the counter treatment first, they are quite effective.

I don't understand how you got infected with thrush from your foot though, unless you used your exfoliating glove to wash between your legs, in which case that is never a god idea.

Good rule of thumb is never to wash your fanjo with anything you have used elsewhere on your body, at least not anything that can harbour bacteria etc.

*good

TrickoftheMind · 12/06/2014 01:37

Athletes foot is caused by dermatophytes, not candida.

Fanjoishoos · 12/06/2014 01:47

I don't really know how it's spread either - I'm guessing that's how it happened as it's the only time I can think my hands touch my feet then move onto the fanjo area. I was in the bath and was washing/using soap but when I get to the fanjo cleaning, I don't use the gloves. Just wash as usual - start at the face/hair, body - top to toe then finish off with last bit (fanjo). Unless it's all just a coincidence and completely unrelated. I've no idea. But bloody hell I'm itchy!

I'll try over counter stuff 1st, see how I get on and then go to docs if it doesn't clear up.

Canestan pill for thrush. Athletes foot cream for athletes foot.

however if you have a smelly fanjo it may be because of BV not thrush. Does it smell fishy? If so you need prescription ABs.

Fanjoishoos · 12/06/2014 01:58

Not fishy, more foul than that. Really unpleasant. And strong odour too, quite difficult to mask. It's fine after a bath but after a few hours I need to wash again so just more frequent baths to deal at the moment.

Just keep soaps out of the bath, the fragrance can make it worse.

TMI, but thrush usually has a distinctive discharge, much like (sorry if you tend to like this) cottage cheese.

I have not noticed a small when I had it though..

Tealady1983 · 12/06/2014 05:51

Thrush shouldn't smell If it does you need to go the docs to find out what it is

Brabra · 12/06/2014 06:02

Have you left a tampon in? That may explain the smell.

If you do have thrush, I really don't think all these baths are good, especially if you are using heavily scented products, try some natural yoghurt.

Fanjoishoos · 12/06/2014 10:50

No tampon. The too many baths -v- need to wash frequently to minimise the odour is a problem. I'll need to lock myself away from the general population while I treat, if too many baths makes it worse. I'm off to buy whatever I can get my hands on to deal with this.

I would go to the doctor, or a walk in GUM, if you have one handy, for quickness.

Whatever they give you will work faster than trying things out and waiting. Then you can go back to having baths if you want them Smile

FWIW, it does not sound like thrush to me. (no expert, just had it badly once)

TheWorldAccordingToJC · 12/06/2014 11:36

you have something called BV

don't OTC medicate - ask Dr for metronizole and that'll sort it.

MedusaIsHavingaBadHairday · 13/06/2014 00:11

Sounds like BV to me. You need to see a doctor sorry...it won't go away by itself and isn't related to your feet!

MirandaWest · 13/06/2014 00:15

Seriously you need to see someone rather than have internet sprites diagnosing for you. They will have seen and smelt things like your fanjo before. And that way you will get better more quickly.

Doinmummy · 13/06/2014 00:17

Doesn't washing too often make this type of thing worse? Washes away the natural good bacteria.
