Strange ilness in 2.7 YO...

My dd who is 2.7 YO has been "off" colour for the last week or so, i ended up taking her to emergency docs last Sun as she was complaining of a sore tummy and "bits" and had a temp for a few days of 39. The GP asked me to take a urine sample which i did, and she had blood in her wee so was given antibiotics to take for a week which she finished yesterday.

Then after being fine, yesterday she was complaining of a sore tummy again, and vomited twice last night, she woke up this morn and was fine again then has vomited twice again tonight.

I am a bit puzzled tbh, if she had a bug surely she would be vomiting right the way through, not just a couple of times then again the next night.I have booked an appointment for tomorrow evening with GP to have a repeat urine test checked and to ask about this, but just wondered if anyone had any ideas what this could be about?

TIA

It sounds as though your dd has a urine infection and unfortunately whatever she was prescribed first time round didn't clear the infection properly. Depending on what germs caused the infection etc. Trimethoprim usually works, but not always.
Poor little thing - hope she feels better soon. Urine infections in toddlers are hard to diagnose so it does sound as though the GP was quick off the mark initially, and it can be trial and error for prescribing until the specimen culture comes back from the lab.
IME the first lot of (wrong) ABs work enough to suppress the infection so you feel pretty much well, but the minute you finish the course the infection pops back up again.

Also some antibiotics can make you sick. See it quite a lot - which ones was she on do you know? If you had a sample sent last week the report should be back today and therefore which antibiotics should 'get rid of' the infection. Not all bacterias are sensitive to all antibiotics. This will mean the GP will know whether or not the ones give, as Marina says were the right ones or not and prescribe appropriately. Hope she is feeling better soon. Is she still passing urine well?

Thanks for the replies ladies

She was on trimethoprim and was supposed to be for 5 days, but the GP said give them for 7 days to make sure it got rid of infection.

Could the vomiting be from the infection then? Didn't think a UTI would cause vomiting.

She isn't drinking very much so hasn't been weeing very much, and what wee's she is doing are very strong smelling and dark in colour. She also had some discharge (greeny colour) last week but that has gone now, just don't know what is going on...or how i can make it better for her

Forgot to add, the sample wasn't sent off as it was bank holiday weekend and the GP didn't want to delay treatment, so will give another sample tomorrow and they should send that off if anything in it, the GP isaw last week said they almost always investigate UTI's in toddlers as they are quite rare...didn't know this.

Have they asked for a follow-up sample a week after finishing the trimethroprim to check the infection has cleared up?

The vomiting might be unrelated, but you could mention it when you go back.

Marina · 05/09/2006 10:33

Trimethoprim does not usually cause vomiting as a side effect, it's generally quite well tolerated (compared to some other antibiotics).
It sounds as though your GP will sort this - as they say, UTIs are comparatively rare in toddlers, and need to be checked carefully to be sure they have cleared right up. I am sure she will be better soon pucca - they have to be careful because of the really small risk of kidney damage in little children.

Going to GP later today, ended up ringing NHS direct last night and they said to take her to emergency doctor, so i woke her up at 10.30pm and went down, the doctor was a pillock and didn't really listen to me, just kept saying about the vomiting being the AB's and if her sample had of shown anything the doctor would have been in touch (doh!) after being there 10 mins i finally got it through to him that no a sample hadn't been sent off was a waste of time, he just gave me some diahoraltye (sp?) thats it.

Will see what is said later when i take her.I was told last week to take another sample for them to check which i will do.

Thanks for all the advice.

Just having a nightmare atm, 4 week old ds is on AB's for a sticky eye and another lot for skin infection, i am on AB cream for infected CS scar and AB tablets for a infection inside too...and now this with dd

Oh, pucca rotten luck.
When you are picking up her new prescription, get yourself some arnica at the chemist, plus some cranberry juice for you and dd, and some acidophilus powder to boost you and dd's gut flora after you have finished your courses of ABs. If that sounds too much just get in some Actimel or Yakult - purists sniff at them but they do contain good bacteria which will help you both.
Dd was on a low dose of trimethoprim for ear infections daily at one point, and has had several short courses of bigger doses for the same reasons, and it never made her sick. Everyone is different of course but I have never heard of it upsetting people the way some other types of AB do. Gggrrrr at your GP and good luck.

foxinsocks · 05/09/2006 10:51

UTIs can cause vomiting - they certainly did in dd and yes the antibs can cause an upset tummy but it seems unusual that she managed to take them with no problem for 5-7 days and then reacted.

Honestly, out of hours doctors make my blood boil - hope you have better luck with your normal GP.

pucca · 05/09/2006 12:02

Foxinsocks...That is exactly what i said, and thought too, but the GP just shrugged, they wind me up so much, make you feel like a imbecile! and talk to you like you are stupid, i only dragged dd out of bed as they made it sound so urgent on the phone, she was fast asleep.

Thanks for the replies
