Presents for someone having chemo

DH's nephew, who lives abroad with the rest of his family, has just started chemo for testicular cancer. It's a pretty grim protocol he's on, so he is likely to be feeling absolutely shit with a fair few unpleasant side effects. I'll be flying over to visit everyone in a few weeks and want to take him some nice stuff as a treat. I'm drawing a complete blank on what to get him! I think it's more the fact that he's a bloke that is throwing me. If he was a woman, I'd do things like trashy magazines, nice hand and body cream, scarves for when her hair falls out...

Be really grateful for any ideas!

Arse - this was supposed to be in general health.

How nice of you :)
How about games for a handheld games console (or a games console like Nintendo DS if you're feeling flash)
Graphic novels - some great ones out
Box sets if he has a laptop.
Decent headphones.
Amazon voucher / kindle
Any favourite sweets / chocs?

cardamomginger · 09/06/2014 23:48

Games console stuff and headphones are a good idea - not sure what the ward set up is where he is, and this would enable him to do stuff without disturbing other patients.

Thanks!

I agree with games console and graphic novels.

He might like some fashionable hats and caps, or ones from favourite sports teams etc.

If he'll be inpatient a lot things like nice slippers and dressing gown, nice pajamas, those lovely soft superdry joggers, cosy soft t-shirts, hoodies etc. If he has a central line would be helpful to have tops with good access to that (e.g. buttoned neck) etc. Not sure how old he is though...

MamaMumra · 10/06/2014 00:25

That's ok :)
Headphones would prevent him disturbing anyone else.
You are really thoughtful though. Hope it all goes well for him.

cardamomginger · 10/06/2014 08:16

He's 28. Slippers good idea! They are starting with arm canula. But I reckon they'll offer a central line as treatment progresses.

What a nice thing to do my DH friend had Chemo and we did similar we put in mens moisturiser as chemo can make your skin dry, lip balm, chocolates or sweets and cartons of juice because may go off his food, thick socks as his feet were always cold, books, magazines (football/cars), puzzle books, I also got puzzles like Rubik's cubes from pound shops.

I hope he feels better soon.

Can you ask his parents if he has an ipad? You could get itunes vouxhers so he can store up some series, or buy him a subscription to the local Netflix type app.

cardamomginger · 10/06/2014 08:57

Itunes vouchers are a good idea. He does have an Ipad.

Socks. Good idea. He's in the middle east, so HOT right now, but aircon is likely to be up in the hospital.

Thanks Smile.

And if he doesn't like the moisturiser, his wife can have it! They are expecting their first child at the end of next month. Sad.

I think that an amazon voucher would be nice. The other ideas are good but it depends on what he already has or hasn't got.

ArcheryAnnie · 10/06/2014 08:59

A couple of beanie hats from cool shops (NB you will have to ask someone else what counts as a cool shop as I am a square...).

grovel · 10/06/2014 09:17

Marmite.

DairyFogMother · 10/06/2014 09:56

Talking books, download some of the humour podcasts on Radio 4 too. I found they realy made a difference as both reading and watching could be quite taxing.

eurochick · 10/06/2014 09:58

Is there anything he would normally miss from the UK? Tea? Digestives? Marmite? That sort of thing.

Otherwise a voucher for a Netflix type service or Amazon is a great idea. I think a year's Amazon Prime subscription now gives access to their service that is like Netflix so that might be a good idea.

ManchesterAunt · 10/06/2014 11:01

Game of Thrones audio books would probably be well received.
