Has anybody taken this for heavy periods? If so, how long does it take to slow down?

Hopeful bump

I took it for pain. I didn't even know that it could make them lighter until I heard it a few months ago, so it certainly didn't have that effect on me.

Onesleeptillwembley · 08/06/2014 16:54

Oh dearHmm thanks anyway.

Have you heard of tranexamic acid? I, and both dd, have used the two together and it's the trans that reduces the blood loss. It works straight away and has been particularly helpful for occasions where a heavy period would be a problem. It sorts it out for a few hours, but I think you could take it for a few days if necessary.

I have now, mrs. I had to see the emergency doctor today and the meg is what he prescribed. I took the first lot around 11am and there's no let up yet, maybe I'm being impatient, but I have long drive and an important meeting tomorrow.

Meg = mefenamic.

I'm no medic but I was prescribed both and the trans was definitely to control the amount of bleeding, it definitely worked. This won't help you for tomorrow but maybe you could see your gp for some if its a regular problem. I was on it for years before having a mirena coil.

Onesleeptillwembley · 08/06/2014 18:15

The mef is apoarently meant to control it as well although it's a painkiller/anti inflammatory. Hope it kicks in.

I take it for pain relief as I suffer with endometriosis and I have noticed bleeding is a bit lighter taking it as well. I did read somewhere that you need to take it 1 or 2 says before your period starts to help with the blood flow... Although that wasn't mentioned by my GP. I have noticed the flow is lighter a day or two after taking it. Good luck and hope it works for you.

Onesleeptillwembley · 08/06/2014 20:57

I've been back and been prescribed Norethisterone. 2nd time lucky hopefully.

Northisterone will not address the root cause of the heavy periods however.

The CAUSE of the heavy bleeding needs to be properly determined and to that end you need a referral to a gynae. Fibroids for instance can cause heavy bleeding to arise. Why has the GP seemingly not referred you, you should be referred.

Hairylegs47 · 08/06/2014 21:03

I used to be 'housebound' for the first 3 days of my period every month til I started taking it. It stopped them by day 3. It was bliss. I took them for 3 years before my periods stopped all together.
But
My DD1 took them, but it didn't help at all.

Onesleeptillwembley · 08/06/2014 22:59

I have been referred, No fibroids, I had a mirena which I stupidly had removed as I had spots, weight gain etc. this is my first full period after. I know it won't solve the problem permanently but this was untenable so a short term solution until later in the week when I can see the doctor again is what I needed.

I take them but it hasn't lightened the bleeding, it does however take away the horrible pain.

Works better if taken after a meal I found.

I hate periods. Be glad when they stop altogether.

bimbobaggins · 10/06/2014 19:52

I have tried both but to be honest didnt find them that great. I had the mirena coil fitted july 2013 . It took seven months to settle which was a real struggle. Still get a very light period but way better than before. I am very over weight anyway but didnt really notice any more gain. I hope you get something to suit. Sometimes the pain i was in was so bad i would have taken an epidural if it had been avaiable

Onesleeptillwembley · 10/06/2014 20:54

Thanks everyone for your replies. By Monday my period was immensely lighter. So the Norethisterone worked well for me. Seeing the doctor on Friday re the ridiculous periods.
