Whooping cough

My DP has had a bad cough for ages - he's had antibiotics which made no difference, tests for asthma and chest x rays - all of which proved negative. Over the summer, we have all been coughing - sudden attacks that leave us red faced, breathless and unable to talk about five or six times a day, but feeling fine in between - apart from maybe a bit less energy than usual. The doctor has finally said,"by a process of elimination" as he put it that it's probably whooping cough, we're not infectious and we just have to wait for it to go away. Apparantly in China it's known as the 100 day cough.
Has anyone else had this and what did they do? I presume if the dr says they're not infectious it's OK for them to go back to school? Should I check with school first? Any alternative remedies? Any help at all??

If it were me I'd 'phone the school and tell them exactly what the doctor said. Then it's up to them, but get the doctor to 'phone the school if they're a bit reticent.

Poor you lot

Hope you all get over it soon. xxx

Sorry curlew, I know that wasn't much help at all. It's just what I would have done.

Thank you - I was wondering about doing that too - but if I'm honest I'm worried the school will err on the side of caution and tell me to keep them off. Any other year, I would be delighted (not a great fan of school!) and I would still be delighted for ds, but dd's got 11+ soon! I'm hoping there's someone who can back up the dr - I don't want to spread it around, but I also don't want dd to miss any school she doesn't have to!

curlew, could you ask your dr for a letter to give to the school?

earlgrey · 04/09/2006 08:01

And surely that wouldn't need backing up????

curlew · 04/09/2006 08:29

I can't believe I didn't think of that! What a twit. Thank you - I think I must have summer holiday brain. No earlgrey to hand - but just brewed some coffee if you'd like a cup?

Still interested in other's experiences, though.

What I meant by back up was back up for me in my decision, not back up for the dr'd opinion in talking to the school Sorry - didn't make myself clear.
