Is Solpadol addictive?

I've been prescribed Solpadol for a knee injury. It's at least 3 months until I have surgery and it's really painful. It seems to be helping, however someone told me today that I shouldn't take it for more than 3 days as it's highly addictive and the withdrawal is awful. Is this true? I want to take it regularly until I have surgery but I don't want to end up addicted!

It contains codeine, which is addictive. I had an awful time coming off it. I was pregnant at the time and gp didn't take me concerns seriously. I am angry that I was ignored. The advice of the pharmacist is "do not exceed 3 days"

I'm really concerned about my GP prescribing this for long term use. CorusKate, I'm trying to come off Citalopram at the moment and when I first told him he told me not to, I reduced the dosage anyway and he's told me to up the dose again even though I feel fine. Do GPs get commission on prescription drugs?!

Well, I've been thinking of signing up with another GP that is more local and is open 7 days a week but not got around to it. I think this is the clincher!

I have a painful joint condition and have taken solpadol (cocodamol 30/500) every day for years. It's one of the standard prescription medications for long term pain. It's better to not be in pain and withdrawal can be dealt with later. If you tolerate it well (some people feel spaced out, sick and dizzy) then you should stick with it, as the only other real alternative is tramadol, which is more addictive and has a greater risk of side effects. How were you getting on with OTC painkillers? BTW in terms of your GP, it is pretty normal to prescribe cocodamol for long term use. Pain relief is supposed to be kept steady, so you don't go through pain highs and lows and at such a level that the pain is minimal while allowing you to function. Your GP, therefore, really hasn't done anything wrong. Unmumsnetty hugs I know how much pain sucks, I hope you feel better soon.
