Chickenpox - I've had it, DD has it - am I contagious?

Just that really. Noticed s couple of spots 2 days ago, first blister appeared yesterday and now her little head is like bubblewrap, poor little soul.

I'm keeping her at home for the whole of next week and doc advised me to keep DS home until Thursday. Grim, but hey ho.

Anyway, my question is, am I contagious if I go out in the evening when they're asleep to do food shopping? Don't know if I'm a carrier or not - I had it when I was 19 really badly, then had shingles a couple of years later, so know I won't get it but am I putting anybody at risk If I go out on my own without them? DH would obviously be looking after them while I popped out.

No you should mount a strong imune response and kill any chicken pox virus that enter your system, not let them multiply and be passed to anyone else.

No you are not contagious and no need to keep your son in either. The incubation period is up to 21 days on average so no point in keeping your DS for a week. He might not even get it. My kids got it a few years apart.

Really? Is that absolutely right? The doctor did tell me to keep him ho,me until Thursday which Ithought was a pain but that that's what you had to do. Don't want to put anyone at risk but is this impossible anyway given that she was infectious 2 days before we noticed anything?

You don't know of your son is going to get them. If your DD has infected your son it could be 3-4 weeks until he gets it and he would only be infectious the couple of days before the rash came out. Not quite sure what your GP meant but I am one and never advise that. Imagine if you had 4 kids. It is only the infected one you need to isolate.

Bit odd that your GP said that, your son won't be contagious for a few weeks - incubation period is 14-21 days, & he would be infectious for the day or two before he came out in the rash. So possibly infectious in around 11-12 days… but possibly not.

I wouldn't quarantine yourself or him. Highly unlikely that you will have it. My DC just had chicken pox, DC2 came out in spots at 16 days later, neither DH nor me got it (both had it in childhood).

Bless you - thank you. That makes much more sense. Will let tje school know on Monday and keep DD in the car.
