Pain in left calf.

Mckayz · 30/05/2014 13:21

Since about 11am I have had a achey feeling in my left calf and I've been feeling hot and just generally rubbish.

I had my wisdom teeth out under GA last Friday and although I can't find the leaflet about DVT now I do remember that it said about calf pain and usually only one leg. I wore stockings for 30ish hours after.

I put my symptoms into the nhs checker and it said to see a GP today.

I have got a GP appointment at 3pm but the receptionist said it was for urgent things only and she would give me the appointment but she didn't think it was really worth an appointment today.

So now I am worrying if I am being stupid but then again I don't want it to be serious and not go to get it checked.

Any ideas?

Thanks

You do need this checked out.

As you say, the risk is DVT, which can be treated perfectly well if caught early and be fatal if left.

Hopefully it won't be a DVT, but it's not a risk to take.

Batmam · 30/05/2014 13:28

No you're not being stupid. It could potentially be very serious so go to the 3pm appt. otherwise A&E. What a silly receptionist, did you tell the what was wrong? It's just not worth the risk as the symptoms you're describing sound very much like dvt. Good luck??

Mckayz · 30/05/2014 13:31

I described my symptoms just as I did here and told her about the GA last week. I hope it isn't.

Part of me thinks that having a pain for only 2 hours doesn't class as an emergency, but if it's what your after care leaflet advises, then you should probably consult a GP.

Receptionists are not medically qualified, and should not have an opinion on what is urgent and what is not. I get really fed up with those who try to fob me off or offer advice when I've asked for a GP appointment. It's none of their business what my illness is or might be.

Perhaps you could ask for a telephone appointment - the GP will call you in if he thinks he needs to see you. (or she).

I has a dvt last year in my leg and the pain progressively gets worse. I went to a&e later in in the evening after aching all day. They measured my leg, took bloods, agreed it could be a clot and I had a heparin injection and sent home. Next day I has an urgent scan which confirmed clot, by which time I was literally dragging my leg.

Good luck and get checked out. I seriously wouldn't wish the pain on anyone, I'd of gladly let the cut my leg off at the time. Hmm

Mckayz · 30/05/2014 13:44

They don't do telephone appointments here. I have asked before and was told the doctors don't have time.

It's probably just muscle pain but I am not willing to take the risk.

Fat thumbs!

Dr thinks it's just a muscular problem. But I've got to wait for blood test results. Should take 10 minutes.

I see you have been to the GP already.

Just to let you know that I have had 2 DVTs. Neither of which were particularly painful - or hot/swollen/red.

If you aren't happy with the GPadvice you can go to A&e - and they will scan your leg.

What is the blood test? is it a d-dimer? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D-dimer

Mckayz · 30/05/2014 17:07

Yeah it was the d-dimer and it was negative. I was very happy with the GP. He was very certain it wasn't DVT.

That's good then.

Phew!! ;)

Mckayz · 30/05/2014 17:30

I did feel a bit daft but the nurses really drummed it into us last week at the hospital about getting any leg pains checked out for 7-10 days after the op.

Batmam · 30/05/2014 23:15

Great news, don't feel daft though you were right to check it out.

PartialFancy · 31/05/2014 08:16

Oh excellent.

How's the leg this morning?

Mckayz · 31/05/2014 09:05

Still the same as yesterday. Doctor said to take paracetamol and to try and rest.

Get well soon.

And presumably just keep an eye.

3littlefrogs · 31/05/2014 10:27

The key things to look for (as well as pain and redness) are:
A difference in the measurement of your calves - check this regularly
Any sign of swelling in the veins of the ankle and foot on the affected side. Always look at both limbs as it is easy to spot changes by comparing them.

I hope you told the GP what the receptionist said as her opinion was both ignorant and dangerous.

3littlefrogs · 31/05/2014 10:28

PS the risk period for DVT post op can be up to 6 weeks, although this is much more common after major surgery.

Mckayz · 31/05/2014 11:00

Thanks 3littlefrogs, I will keep an eye on it. I did mention to the GP that I wasn't sure it was something that needed looking at after the receptionist said it wasn't urgent. But he said that he would rather I went in for nothing than stayed at home with something that could be life threatening.

Your GP sounds really good.
