Does anyone have any experience of high iron levels?

I had a letter today from my GP saying my iron levels were higher than normal and to stop taking any iron supplements and make an appointment. I made the appointment for two weeks from now (earliest one). But the thing is, I am not taking any supplements, and have not been taking any for a long long time (well over a year). I did a bit of googling and nothing adds up. I don't have any of the risk factors or do any of the things that would make iron levels high. I also did a quick tally of my daily food intake and I average around 14mg of iron a day. NHS recommends 18mg.

Soooo......can anyone shed some light on this? Why would my iron levels be high? What am I missing and what should I ask at the GP?

One possible explanation for raised iron levels could be haemochromatosis. But your GP will be able to explain and confirm by referral to a specialist if that is the case. It is a condition that can be managed and is not anything brought on by lifestyle or 'risk factors'. I have limited experience of the condition so not an expert or a doctor and I'm not stating that is the only possibility.

I hope you are not worrying too much over this and that you get some proper answers soon.

Thanks. I had read that was a possibility. Hmmm. All seems very odd.
