I need one because am getting occasional bleeding between periods. I don't tolerate smears etc very well and wondered if I ask will I be able to have a ga? does anyone have any advice or experience please? The hospital blurb says it is their preferred way to do as outpatient.

Hello, i'm back. Well I survived and all told I was in there (the hospital) for 45 minutes. They said it all looked completely normal so didn't take a biopsy in the end. I was very anxious and cried before they even started as I was so scared. they were really nice and I felt that they cared about how I was feeling.

I was given a local in my cervix and it was similar to having one at the dentist in as much as they do a few different points. I took dh in with me and I held his hand. I found the procedure uncomfortable but do able although i didn't have anything done. The injection made my heart race a bit and I tingled all over and was shaking but they said thats due to the adrenalin, exasperated by my adrenalin due to nerves and it passed a couple of minutes after.
I would recommend taking the day off as I have period type cramps and bleeding so I am laying in bed watching telly. I did actualy fall asleep for a while this afternoon and again I think that was due to me working myself up in to such a frenzy. Glad it's over but not as bad as I expected.

Glad it's over Meg and that they found nothing untoward. Thanks for posting your experience here. Smile

Glad you are okay :)
Take it easy.
Just to add again for anyone reading who might have this done- I chose not to have a local on the grounds that I'd already had a biopsy on its own which was totally painless. I had the back up of a local if I changed my mind during the procedure. I can honestly say that I felt no pain at all even though it took around 30 mins. You could kind of 'feel' something being done but it felt as if it was in a remote part of the body and there was no real pain.

Well done Meg x

kazzawazzawoo · 21/06/2014 17:49

So were the injections meg had a local then? Would it be preferable to have nothing at all?

ab987 · 21/06/2014 19:12

Yes that's right- a local.

I can only tell you what I did and you need to decide for yourself.
I had heard that the injection could be painful and worse than the procedure itself. If you can have the choice of nothing but an injection as a back up if needed that seems a good move.

Sorry to repeat something l said earlier, but l would love to know why this procedure has so many variations in terms of whether GA, local etc? Surely in terms of costs, it must be cheaper to do them under local, but GA is offered in many places Confused

Hello everyone. The bleeding today is minimal but I still have quite bad cramps and lower back pain despite taking ibuprofen and paracetamol, is this normal?

Yes, lots of time to worry about it Wink

At the moment I have no bleeding, which is wonderful after bleeding on and off for ages.
