How do you cope? Do you get any abuse/comments?

My dd has a blue badge ,she is not obviously disabled and nobody has ever said anything to us .

BlissfullyIgnorant · 25/05/2014 00:17

Abuse - yes. Mostly from older people who clearly think the badges should be handed out alongside bus passes and pensions, but who get mightily embarrassed when asked "Can I help you? I couldn't help but notice you staring/glaring at me as I parked." I do hate it, though, when I see people park up, stick a blue badge on the dash and leg it into the supermarket leaving poor parent sweating in the car like an ill-treated dog. Too many people take the piss.

I get mine next week. Very mixed emotions about it.

Feel embarrassed, guilty, sad, relieved, pleased, understood, upset....all about being given one.

Giraffes, don't feel in the least guilty, i know the effort it took my parents GP to get them theirs.

DDad didn't look disabled (sadly he's far frailer now), but he has heart failure and gets really breathless if he has to walk far. DM has crutches so no one would question her.

I was expecting to be turned down and have to see an occupational health person - would have been fine with that. But to get it right away makes me wonder what was said from GP/consultant.

It will make life easier - and as I said on form will allow me to continue working.

Just need to get my head around it all :) Thanks

My friend has one for her little boy, he seems well as anything until he has one of his many major epileptic fits in a day.

My mum has always had one. She has severe crohns disease. The amount of abuse she gets from people is awful, especially if she has to use the disabled toilets (which she is more than entitled to do). They seem to think because she is a glamorous slim woman wearing make up nothing could possibly be wrong.

I use to get some comments & lots of dirty looks - I've had a badge since I was 43. I now use a walking stick so as soon as people see that the dirty looks stop.

Tbh I thought I'd get abuse or at least rude comments! but never have. Which makes me see that either I look more disabled than I think or I'm not very interestingSmile.

I now get absolutely furious when non badge holders use the disabled spaces. At the gym where I have physio the car park is always busy and the disabled spots are nearly always used by mums collecting their children last week there was a woman sitting in her car on the phone. I drew up alongside her and lowered my window and asked if she had a BB. Well she looked most put out and said 'Well, no but I'm waiting for my daughter'...like that makes it fine?!

I have a blue badge... and a sports car ... you can imagine the looks THAT gets when I park up! I have Episodic Ataxia, so only use it when wobbly but unless I have my stick with me.. I look pretty normal as I get out of the car..til I wobble off Grin

And yes.. it's the old folk who are the prime glarers...
