Might depend where you get it ? Thinking if you are tense and matbe hold yourself awkwardly when stressed that this may have an effect on shoulders ,back etc and lead to pain ?

Have you tried alternating heat and cold packs on affected area ? Finish with cold . Anti inflammatories ? That ibuleve gel stuff ?

Private appt with oesteopath/chiropractioner /Alexander technique ?

Hope someone else comes along with more targeted help !

Wishing you better .

I haven't had it but I recently had shingles and the affected nerve was in my face, and of course I googled and discovered that the main complication of shingles was something called post herpatic neuralgia and is most often felt in the area where the rash spread. I was high risk because of being female, over 60 and because the affected nerve was in my face. Although I was low risk because I didn't have any pain with the shingles and it was a mild attack.

However a week or so ago I had a sharp stabbing pain in my lower jaw (that seemed to be the type of pain described in the post thingy neuralgia) but I was convinced the pain was coming from my tooth so I hared off to the dentist next day and she had a good look at the tooth but said there wasn't anything wrong with it, and when I said I'd had shingles (the rash was still on my face) she said I probably did have a "bit of neuralgia" but it should settle down in a couple of weeks. I've had a niggly pain since then, but nothing to worry me.

The dentist said there were 2 types of neuralgia- the most uncommon one was trigeminal neuralgia and can be very painful, and then the post shingles one which could also be very painful but was more common.

I googled of course and the trigeminal one seems to be the worst though there are treatments, but I think it's a bit "trial and error" with the meds. Seems than anti epileptic drugs are one of the treatments.

Why do you think it's neuralgia and not something wrong with your teeth, or is it in another part of your body?

I have triennial neuralgia. Excruciating pain that painkillers do not touch. Covers half my head, stopping mid line of face. Only certain tablets that act on nerves will do anything, in my case it is industrial strength doesn't of amitriptilene. Seriously the worst pain ever, and that's from someone that's had ketamine after an accident.

Co codamol won't do anything for neuralgia.. nerve pain doesn't respond to opiates... you need to go back and ask for nerve pain meds.. tegretol, gabapentin (I have trigeminal Neuralgia and it has been a life saver) or pregabalin.

TN is the worst pain imaginable.. but can be controlled with the right meds!

I take Nortriptyline for TN it does help a lot.
