Dental abscess, in agony

unrealhousewife · 24/05/2014 14:25

I have been given metronidazole but the emergency dentist said there is bone loss and gum disease.
He said to swill it with very hot salt water and the nurse said NOT to put heat on my cheek.
It's a lower back tooth.

I have no more painkillers to take and I know a heat pad will soothe it but should I? Will it draw the pus out to the wrong place?

Heeeelp!

I was up most of last night but it's receded. Heat and cold are ok but am keeping away from anything sugary. Heat on the slin soothes but I don't want to get a pustule. When I stand up it feels like it's all draining down into my chin. So far I have been in bed as any movement meant more throbbing. Now the swellings are tender and quite hard around the jawline and under the chin. What does that mean?

Sounds like the nerve is dying, generally causes throbbing pain although sugary points towards there being a hole in the tooth. I'd like to take an x ray to be sure of going on

unrealhousewife · 24/05/2014 23:07

It's tender to bite on but the tooth has moved out of line so I'm doing a bit of gurning and eating like a 95 year old.

Sure of what's going on. Sorry

Mrsmorton · 24/05/2014 23:14

I think you may have a combination of "chronic pulpitis" and " acute periapical periodontitis". Still, without seeing your tooth it's hard to be sure.

unrealhousewife · 24/05/2014 23:18

That's slightly terrifying, should I google it or am I better off unaware?

this is a bit of a biff in article about it.

sunbathe · 24/05/2014 23:24

Mrsmorton - are you saying teeth with an abscess can be saved? I've just had one removed, they said that was all they could do.

unreal - I found saltwater rinses helpful.

Mrsmorton · 24/05/2014 23:27

Boffin article that should have said. Wikipedia is quite helpful.

sunbathe some can! some can't. There are so many factors involved that some need to be removed, some can be saved quite easily and everything in between. It's impossible to say.

Of course, I'm going to bed now though! Maybe see you all tomorrow/Monday!

How are you OP? Have been thinking about you and Mrs Morton meeting all day - I was going to do a grin emoticon but then thought it might be a bit inappropriate.

Much better today, the pain and the swelling have subsided a bit.

I have spent the day looking for dental treatment and been given the runaround by 111 services.

I'm going to contact my usual dentist first thing Tuesday and get this drained and cleaned out as per Mrs Morton's valuable advice.

The NHS drives me potty, it truly does. It seems to drive the staff fairly potty too, they seem to be bombarded with 111 cases in A and E when they could simply ensure there are more dentists and GPs on emergency call. A lot of my friends have awful teeth because they can't afford to get work done. I was there for a while too, and it's cost the NHS a lot in terms of healthcare to pick up the flak from my lack of treatment.

All better for for now though. It really was almost as bad as a contraction that pain. I'm dreading the cost to get the bone loss sorted out, if it's not too late already.

Pls someone help I had a little abscess under my tooth 3 week ago and my dentist gave me amoxicillin which worked but this weekend it came back 1000 times worse. I've never ever felt pain like this so I went back today and he gave me metronidazole I've took 2 and just about to tak my third now. But I'm in tears the pain is so bad I've had ibuprofen 3 times today with paranormal but it's not doing ought. Shall I go to hospital or will this pain ease up. Pls help me x

TisMeTheLadFromTheBar · 21/02/2017 01:35

Could you call out of hours and ask for advice?

FlashCrash · 21/02/2017 01:36

Hi Keza81, the pain is going to keep coming back until you have the tooth out (or root canal treatment). Antibiotics are only a temporary thing and will normally take 24-48hrs to work.
Keep taking the antibiotics and ring 111 for more painkiller advice. You may be able to take something stronger, or adjust what you're taking at the moment.
Feel better soon (flowers)

Musicaltheatremum · 21/02/2017 07:12

Mrs Morton, your words are music to my ears and why as a GP I refuse to give antibiotics for dental problems. We get no dental training at all but we are easier to get an appointment with allegedly! I go to a dentist in my practice area and have managed to get emergency appointments for me every time I have needed them. (2x root canals)

oh, sorry Keza, Blush

Keza81 · 21/02/2017 13:16

Aww thank you everyone I didn't want to bother the NHS service as it was late I was up till about 4.45 crying in agony but woke up today the pain has eased. I'm back at the dentist on the 9th and he's going to remove my tooth. So shall I still ring up 111 and ask them what other pain meds I can take? Thank you x
