vitamin d question about test results

just looking for experience or knowledge!

vit d was 60nmol /l which Dr said was ok. my symptoms arevit d aches and pains and lots of infections plus extreme brain fog. my thyroid is well replaced on 150, I'm around 8 stone. tsh consistently below 1. no arthritis etc. not anemic. been taking a bf multi vit with x2 rda vit d (though I know this is piddling) and I do eat a lot of eggs and fish.

however when I read vit d ranges etc 60 nmol is 24 ng/ml which is insufficient in some places eg US. I've read a bmj article by pearce and cheetham who quote the range my lab have used. I've looked at Holick stuff etc. I've also seen mumsnet threads quoting a nmol range whereby 60 is insufficent, with >75 preferable.

Im going to ask for a print out to check it all. Does anyone have any thoughts/ experience etc?

other than just self medicating via Holland and barrett! I've found the relevant info on the vit d council website to do this.

TIA!

Vitamin d is due to not enough sun. Maybe a nice trip to somewhere sunny and exotic would be good for you :) I have vitamin d deficiency

littleowl14 · 24/05/2014 10:23

I'm am now taking every opportunity to go out in the sun (sensibly!)

several colleagues have had skin cancer so I've definitely avoided it.

60's OK, but really it needs to be above 100 to be replete.

Get yourself some gelcaps, or an oral spray, and go for it.

Vitamin D deficiency goes hand in hand with hypothyroidism.

My vit D test came back at 60 like yours. at this level I suffer like you do especially with the aches and pains. I supplement with approx 1400 IU daily and feel enormously better for it, I can manage to keep going and function like a normal person at this level. I really notice it if I miss a day too, so I do think it helps rather than me just imagining it.

thanks rockin and penny. interesting to hear you've felt the same at 60 penny. I guess you were not treated by the .gp?

I've ordered some from amazon which I think are American gel caps 5000 iu , 'now foods'. I'm going to take them for a couple of months (probably not EVERY day!) after looking at the vit d council website and watching a newer Holick lecture in YouTube. then I'll drop to 2000. hopefully we'll have some sun too! I'm going to take this level as I'm breastfeeding, Holick advises 4000iu if bf. I'm also nearer 40 than 35 iykwim!

does anyone suggest a different brand?

I know I'm not imagining the aches in my hands, wrists, back and ankles. And I know the brain fog is not 'just' depression as I've had that before quite seriously. I've not been doing the weight baring exercise I used to so will aim to do that when feeling better. I'm definitely a lot weaker now.

I'm sceptical about vitamin D now. My level came back as 15 nmol/l and even after 16 weeks high dose D3 supplement I feel no different.

I envy those who claim boosting their vitamin D levels improved their pain or fatigue, I have seen no improvement whatsoever.

PoshPenny · 25/05/2014 08:37

Littleowl, no - no treatment offered/suggested by GP. My bitter experience is that if your result comes back in "normal" range, that means there's nothing wrong. I work outside with horses, I would never have thought I would have low Vit D in the first place, let alone that supplementing would help so much. I am sorry to hear that it doesn't work for everyone though.

littleowl14 · 25/05/2014 08:45

longtime, sorry to hear that. your result is extremely lowso I imagine it would take some time to physically feel better? studies certainly seem to last over a year.
